I did a search on this & saw where some of you were haveing trouble with some of these tools. I'd like to get one somewhere. There's on on ebay right now at 10 bucks. Is this something still avail from Yamaha and if so does anyone have a part#? BTW, thanks for all the sugestions. This is a great group.

I bouight mine on Ebay with shipping was 34.00 I didn't think that was bad, I've seen them sell for as high as 80.00 just for a small peice of metal. I had to do some fab work on the tool to make it work. Enlongate the holes a little bit (aprox 2mm)toward the inside, as well as thin the metal down a bit (on the inside part that touches the head) in order to get the nipple part of the tool to push down the shim keeper enough to pull the shim out. Works great now. Sure beats the old fashioned way of changeing shims( pulling the cams )S.R.Czekus

If it's the motion pro tool on ebay it's probably mine. I put it up for sale this past weekend when, after owning it for ten years I gave up trying to make it work.
Rather than offer it here and frustrate one of you guys with it, I figured someone seasrching ebay will have a bike that it does fit.
The motion pro tool does not fit the XS1100. It may well fit other yamaha engines, though I don't know which ones.
It took me less time to pull the cams than it did to try figuring out a way to make the tool almost work.
Does anyone have the real scoop on the right tool? Maybe the official yamaha shop manual has the tool pictured, with part number? Anyone know?

The valve adjustment tool will work, with a minor adjustment. Check here Valve adjustment for a page I put together on valve adjusment, and also the modifications I made to the tool. Simple mod, just ground down the surface that sits on the cylinder head, allowing the tool to sit lower and contact the valve bucket.Brian

I'm using the Motion Pro tool but I had to grind the inside radius so it would work on the intake side. Before grinding, the tip would contact the head when tightened. I think the heads were not all the same.Bill Murrin

I agree with Randy. I have had my share of dealing with these valve shims during my restoration of the BIGDOG and it is much faster to just simply pull the cams. Initailly I was concerned about getting it back in time every time, but it really was no big deal.79 XS1100 f (BIGDOG)
