He is talking about the little rubber caps that go on the brass nipples on the carb intake boots. Also make sure the vacuum advance hose in plugged into the brass nipple on the #2 carb body and not the intake boot nipple.

Along the lines of vacuum leaks, make sure that the vacuum line going to the fuel distribution block, (known as the octy) if you still have it on there, are not leaking either. This line should go to one of the brass nipple on the intake boots.

Things that have happened to me before:

      (1) Vacuum leaks (mine was butterfly shaft seals)- After the bike was warmed up and I came to a stop, the idle would gradually drift up to 2-2.5k.

      (2) Rich pilot jets (K&N instead of Mikuni)- Idle was always fast and erratic. I'd get it settled down, then when I blipped the throttle, it would go up and not come back down- I could see and smell it was way too rich.

      Good Luck.

            Diaphragms

VERIFY that the diaphragms are tight on the slides. Should not be able to turn the slide within the diaphragm. If any are loose, a correction is required.

I'm glad you said something about that Mike, it reminded me of a question I've been meaning to ask here.

I have a set of slides that have perfect diaphragms on them but they all spin on the slides. The rubber is tight in the rings but the rings are loose on the slides so they won't stay properly oriented.

Trying to figure out how to fix them.

                Hey Greg,

How about just applying some superblack Oil/fuel resistant RTV to the TOP side of the slide/diaphragms where it won't be exposed to the fuel fumes. And since it's just next to the slide/thick portion of the diaphragm it shouldn't interefere with the flexibility or action!? JAT?

The plastic rings are loose on the slides. Thought about maybe some epoxy but I don't really like the idea.

                    Don't try super glue

                    Hey BA 80
I bought some jbm replacement diaphrams and per their suggestions used super glue on them. gas melts it and slide glues itself to carb ...on a side note because diaphrams were loose on slides ? I had/have carb problems similar to the ones you were battling with ...since they are on my "El Toro"bike I just live with a bit of stumble ..

Do not take it to a dealer! You'll pay big $$$ and the problem will likely persist. We have all been through similar problems so a wealth of knowledge you can draw from is right here.
As for the shims, just tell us what you need. A number of us keep a library of them.
The problem with with broken idle mixture screw tips is that the holes become somewhat distorted, so the number of turns out from"lightly seated" will be different from factory (and each other). The fact that you just discovered them leads me to believe that your initial carb cleaning effort may have been subpar. Strip them down and remove all the jets and needle jets and do it again.
