My brother brought his 80G over on Friday complaining that his rear brakes were acting "funny." The rear disc was hot, so the first thing I checked was that the caliper was releasing. I just rebuilt his entire brake system a couple months ago, so I was pretty doubtful that was the problem. The disc was free, but as I spun the wheel by hand it was dragging at one point in the rotation, so I got out the dial gauge.
The runout on the disc is about .08", but the wheel is where things got interesting. I measured the runout on the wheel at .15", which is way out of spec. But with the dial gauge in place and zeroed I can grab the tire and deflect .20" to either side of zero just by pushing and pulling on it. That's .40" total movement of the rim, and it's got me wondering if the wheel is bad or it's just the wheel bearings that are shot.
Any ideas?
