  • Choke lever question

When I pull out the choke lever on my '79 F, it pulls right back in. Isn't it supposed to stay put until I move it again?

Yup. Might be missing the little ball bearing things that hold the bar in place. If I remember correctly, there should be one in each throttle body where the bar goes through. Did you take that choke bar out at any time?

Thanks for the info. I'm guessing that the previous owner probably worked on the carbs, put away his tools and asked "What are these little ball bearings for?"

Actually, the springs underneath them send them flying. I always forget that. I replaced them with #6 shot, but the lead flattened out. Nobody shoots #6 steel, so I do without.

Hey Craig, put a brass washer under the levers' circlip.

Thanks for the tip on the brass washer. What exactly will that do?

If you squeeze a small brass washer between the lever and its mounting tabs you'll get a good firm friction adjustment. No need for ball bearings. Undo the circlip, pull out the small pin, then put in the washer. The washer goes between the lever and the tab.

                Psssst! Hey Kiwi!

Whispering...Triple clean... Are you screaming yet? How goes it down there? Any snow yet? Are you still riding?

Yeah man. We ride all year down here. Just hop off and wrap the hands around the muffler occasionally! The snow's just a starting to appear - but the rain and gales soon wash it away. Might have to bite my tongue about tr*** cleaning - had to give the carbs another going over a few days back. Mumble...mutter...

                  Keep on keeping on. Cheers.

Understood! I'll give the ol' brass washer a try this weekend.
