  • 80 SG Base Gasket

OK, so the BG came Friday and I have no clue whether this is the real OEM
one or aftermarket as the sleeve had been opened.
If someone familiar with these can post back and confirm the authenticity (if there is any way to determine), I'd appreciate it.

I guess I am more than curious as there has been some discussion as to the reliability of the AM.

Tried to tell you that doc, but you wouldn't listen. The plastic is open because someone robbed the orange O-rings out of there and sold the gasket.

I believe that's OEM because the aftermarket ones are blue.

        LOL, Greg. Thanks.
Who was the one that sent me the link to the eBay listing?
And exactly what was I not listening to. Slurp, Burp or Fart?

I freakin' told you we didn't need the base gasket, just the orange O-rings and some three bond.

I also told you we didn't need to fight with that damn cam chain either.

            Funny.
I bought the 3 Bond last year. It's on hand. Why did I have to l buy the BG if that's the case?
The Cam Chain accordingly is recommended to be replaced anyway, so the point is moot.
Argue all you want, the BG (now authenticated) is here and will be put on.

LOUDER, I din't quite catch that.

Anyway, here's what we're dealing with:

If you're replacing the chain you'll need to either split the cases to put on the OEM endless chain, or find one with a master link and the tool to install the master link.

No, I said just put the O-rings on and slather it with three bond, you kept insisting on the base gasket so I found you one.

All you need on the cam chains with a master link is a center punch to peen the end of the pin out. (It's hollow) A few taps with a shop hammer behind it holding it is all it takes. I don't understand a person that would do a motor rebuild without replacing the cam chain while there. That'd be like rebuilding one and not replacing the crank bearings. Oh wait...

And yes, I'm of the opinion to lose the base gasket as well. Too many of them leak. Put it up for sale on Ebay.. there's lots of dummies that'd buy unnecessary things like that. Oh wait...

Doc's engine is pretty low mileage and the reason for the bore kit was oil consumption which was because of the fact that it was seized when he drug it out of the field. The cylinder walls are rust pitted and the rings were damaged breaking the pistons loose.

In other words, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Still don't understand. Why would you make new part of your motor and leave easy to replace stuff, while you're there, old? So how did the PO treat the bike in those low miles? I mean.. it was left in a field, right? In your view, why even bother ever changing the oil if it still starts and runs?

If he's just gonna half-azz the rebuild, he should have just got some stock cylinders, got some rings, re-used the pistons and gone on. It would have been a lot cheaper. If it's just burning some oil due to the cylinders, why spend the money on a head re-do. It ain't broke, right? lol.
