hi all yes fighting with my bike again. Since it set for the carb and valves rebuild my front bread is acting up. I rebuilt the calipers and master cylinder 3 years ago. Well drove it today for a bit and when I parked and went to back out it didn't seem to want to release. the lever has a quarter totally free, I am not really sure were to start . Take both calipers off and re hone the insides? What is causing them to not release

Look into "spooge hole clogged", via search feature. Short story: the return hole may be plugged. However, since I cannot see your brakes, nor certify how you rebuilt them, it could also be sticky calipers from a corroded seal area that was not cleaned properly.

Pull the master cylinder off, empty it out, take it apart completely, and blow air into that spooge hole, while blocking off the banjo bolt hole. I would not recommend sticking anything in that hole besides air or brake cleaner. Other's may chime-in with guitar string, etc.

Open the bleeder screw on the caliper, if it releases it'll be in the lines or master cylinder. If not it's in the caliper.

As you are in a humid area, I would flush the brake fluid every two years, at the outside. DOT3 or 4 WILL absorb water, and that will cause all kinds of problems with the brakes.

If you haven't done it, you need to pull the plastic reservoir off of the master cylinder body. 'Crud' will accumulate under the part that fits into the main body and keep leaking out and clogging the system.

                    See post #8.

U gotta bench bleed the MC. Too much air. Option two is reverse bleeding them (no speed bleeders).

WTF!?!? Why are you sucking on the MC, and from WHAT post did you read that????

Put your thumb over the banjo bolt hole and continuously squeeze the lever till you get pressure at your thumb. Bench bleed done. Reconnect the line, and bleed normally.

Or, reverse bleed with a syringe/baster.

Did you make sure the holes inside the bowl were all clear? Did you make sure the one way valve in the plunger was clean and not stuck? Did you reassemble the MC correctly?

You need to be careful not to pull the lever back too far when you don't have any pressure on the MC. Pulling it back too far can unseat the plunger, and then you have to disassemble it to get it back in place. Attaching a small block of wood between the lever and the handlebar will keep you from pulling it in far enough to unseat the plunger.

As far as bleeding the brakes - it can be a real booger on XS's. I always use a power bleeder, and it makes things so much easier. It allows you to put a vacuum on the system at the calipers, and all you usually need is short strokes on the lever to get fluid flowing.

I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.
