  • Help me diagnose

I have a 1980G, I bought it five months ago and up until today it has been running fine. Here is what happened:

I took the bike for a ride this morning, it started fine. When I went to drive away it felt as if it was only running on two cylinders. At idle it fires on all four and I can rev it up no problem in nuetral. As soon as I put it in gear it feels like its running off two. Occasionally above 5k the rest will kick in and it runs off all four.

Where do I start? Is it coils, bad wires - is it even electrical? Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks
    1980 G

What also helps is where is it kept? Is it outside is it covered because water can get into wires that are old. Like Steve said check the pick up coils first. But also if the bike has been in the dry and gotten wet your plug wires could have issues. Have you done anything lately change plugs? Did you recently take a cover off? Seat off? Things like this are helpful in determining where to go.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

Usually a missfire under a load is secondary ignition....plugs, wires, coils....
I'd start there......and then clean the carbs again....

Unplug the neutral switch. See if the problem goes away. Have you gotten it wet lately?

+1 on the pickup coil wires. Remove the left side round ignition cover. Use two hands and pull like trying to seperate wire. Insulation stretch like a rubber band means broken pickup coil wire(likely the white wire).

The pickup wires would be my first port of call. Incidentally, the probe wires that come with those cheap multimeters make good pickup leads. They are flexible and allow the pickup plate to rotate easily

+1!ose wires.........the mechanical AND vacuum advance is rotaing advance far enough under load to break away that final teeny wire in one of those wires......likely the white wire.
