    Techna-fit Brake Lines Fitment Issue - 81SH

    I got a set of Techna-fit brake lines for my '81 XS1100SH from here:

    They indicate that this kit fits YAMAHA 1980 MIDNIGHT SPECIAL, FRONT & REAR LINES - 4 Line Kit. ALSO FITS: XS1100SF, SG, SH MODELS.

    The front MC to splitter and rear lines look good, but it looks like the clocking is 180 degrees off for the banjo fittings for the front two splitter to caliper lines. I checked them against my SF, F and XJ and it doesn't look like they would fit any of these either.

    Anyone else have these issues with these lines, or am I just missing somthing?

    I recently put a set of techna fit stainless steel lines on my '79F. The line that goes from the master cylinder to the "Y" fitting in the front was too short. I contacted them and they sent me another line at their expense. Just give 'em a call - they'll make it right.
    I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

      No problem with the company or the overall quality of the lines. It's Sunday, so not much I can do today. I was just really hoping I was overlooking something.

      I will contact them tomorrow, though.

        That's Murphy's law for incorrect parts. On mine it was a Friday when I chose to redo the brake lines, so I couldn't contact them until the following Monday. I just put the old brake line back on and continued to march until the new one came in. I had to bleed the brakes twice, but I wasn't going to let the old girl sit on account of a brake line. Then I thought, "since I'm going to have to bleed 'em again anyway I might as well rebuild the front master cylinder while I'm at it." So I ordered a master cylinder rebuild kit from Z1 and just made a day out of tweaking brakes when the correct parts came in. When life hands you lemons...

            I put a set on my 80G a few months ago, all went well but I have superbike bars so I can't comment on the splitter to the MC length. I did notice that the angles on the bottom hoses (splitter to caliper) were off a bit but it all went together fine (maybe the hoses I took off were not factory? but they were rubber - who knows). The grommets did not fit, I reused the old ones.

              I had a problem with the grommets on the front lines - they were too narrow for the retaining straps. Rather than change the grommets I just ground down the width of the straps. The grommets on the rear line fit pretty well.

              I'll say this for them - those SS lines certainly changed the way my brakes feel. I like 'em a lot.

                Mine didn't come with grommets on the front. I haven't gone much beyond holding the new lines up to the old lines and holding them in the installation positions. I was surprised that the rear line was a complete replacement including rubber bits.

                I called this morning and they are shipping out another pair of the front lines for me today.

                I have universal Russel lines on my XJ that I got from a local shop. I'm happy to try black lines this time around because the clear color of my other lines seemed to yellow from UV exposure and are a pain to keep clean.

                  One of the things I like about Techna Fit is that they're just over on the other side of India-no-place, so for us they don't have very far to ship.

                  I'll offer up a tip, too. Don't throw your old crush washers away. If you heat them with a propane torch until they just glow red, and immediately drop them in a glass of water, it will re-anneal them and you can reuse them. Don't heat them too long or they'll distort - just heat them 'till they glow red. I hold mine with a pair of needle nose pliers while heating, and I usually do this twice for each crush washer just to make sure the pliers aren't acting like heat sinks. I haven't bought a crush washer since I learned that trick. JAT

                    A piece of baling wire with a hook to hold the washer will save your pliers from heat hurt. And allow you to heat the whole washer at once.

                      I did get the replacement lines today. They do look like they are correct now and will check them out tonight when I get home.

                      The only thing I'm sad about is they didn't put the plastic strain relief covers with the DOT imprint on the ends like the original set. They're inconsistent with the other lines now, which would upset someone with OCD. Just splitting hairs here as I doubt they will matter. I'll put up a comparison picture later this evening.

                        Well, if you're willing to pay much more, go ahead and get the Chacal lines. These are alternatives at a cheaper price. Not OEM replicas . . .

                          I don't have a concern that the lines are different from OEM. The replacement lines didn't include parts that they included on the original lines. See the photo below.

                          Here are the 3 issue I experienced:

                          1. The product didn't fit as advertised - this was resolved quickly at their expense.
                          2. The replacement product didn't have all the features advertised (strain reliefs at connector ends).
                          3. They typo'd my street address (not my mistake). I e-mailed them when I got the package, then spoke with them on the phone to correct it and they did not when sending out the replacement. If the company name wasn't on the package, it would have been a hassle.

                          All of that said, the product seems to be a quality product and they are quick.

                            I wonder if you can pull that strain relief gizmo off and slip it on the new line? Or call 'em up and have them send you another set if you really think you need it.

                              I don't mean to make a big deal out of it, but nope, it's a hard molded plastic. It subjectively doesn't look as good up against the freshly painted black calipers.

                              To assure you're buying Techna-Fit's lines and are covered under Techna-Fit's DOT certification look for Techna-Fit's registered FTS mark stamped on the rubber boot of all our assemblies.

                              Some SS line manufacturers have adopted the practice of molding a semi-rigid polymer over the fittings at either or both ends of the line. These features act as a strain relief for the SS braid where the fitting is secured to the line. In some cases, lines without these features can fail certain dynamic portions of FMVSS106, as the SS braid can wear itself into the Teflon line where it is secured to the end fitting.
