Y'all XSives have helped me out with great wisdom regarding Mikuni fun. I've got a few questions started, adn more that I want to get brewing as I try too get ahead of what I'm going to have to mod/repair next......

Question two: How useful is the kickstart option really? I'd love to make the slip-on a permanent fixture, but my reading so far makes me think it's quite the stupid idea. Still, before I moved my sights from a medium bike to a behemoth 1.1 litre dragon, I was virulently anti-electric start. I like the old school feel of kick only, but really? I mean, I started tarpon fishing with a fly rod, and turkey hunting with a bow. WHY MAKE EVERYTHING HARD?
"Venturered" 80 XS1100G - "DoraMax" getting sort of resto/destro ed.

Yeah it's a pretty blue, but just because you're old is no excuse to buy a bagger. Fortunately I have wrenches.

Nothing romantic about kick-starting an XS11. I have a kicker on their from my 850 just for looks. Never used it once. Battery is healthy, and starter is cleaned, greased, and has new brushes . . .

Gotta split the case to install unless the inner gear part is in tact.

That slip on kick starter that lives under the battery is referred to as the emergency kick starter. And that's the only time I'd use it - in an emergency. Like if the starter button didn't work.

That being said, it's a good idea to go through both handlebar switch assemblies and clean the contacts and knock off any rust you find in there. They can actually get pretty grungy inside, and there's a little steel plate behind the starter button that tends to rust. Plus the ignition circuit runs through the kill switch, and those contacts tend to get corroded too.

So my vote goes for doing the preventative maintenance, and pushing the button when you want to go somewhere.

And one other thing I like about electric starters - they'll never launch you over the handlebars.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

On your 80, it's NOT a viable option unless you plan on splitting the cases for something else. Special Ed had one on his '79, but he hasn't put one on the "new" engine he's running in the 80. They will work, and they are NOT that hard to kick, but why?!?!
The electric works as long as the battery is good, and if it does NOT work, you probably are NOT riding anyway...
