You can still get the FSM from Yamaha, but it's nearly $100. I have found the Harley manuals are somewhat reasonably priced, but they only cover 1 or 2 years worth of a specific model. The Haynes/Clymer HD manuals cover more years, but cover many of the year differences with the phrase 'will be similar' and only showing one version. One thing I wish Yamaha did that Harley does is offer parts books; again, they're limited to one or two years usually, but Harleys part numbering system is a bit better than Yamahas' for determining interchange between years/models.

The '13' version of the XS manual is the one to get if you can, but it's a bit hard to use. Basically just attaching 'supplements' to the '78E manual detailing year/model differences, you can end up doing a lot of jumping around in it.
Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

'78E original owner - resto project
    '78E ???? owner - Modder project FJ forks, 4-piston calipers F/R, 160/80-16 rear tire
    '82 XJ rebuild project
    '80SG restified, red SOLD
    '79F parts...
    '81H more parts...

    Other current bikes:
    '93 XL1200 Anniversary Sportster 85RWHP
    '86 XL883/1200 Chopper
    '82 XL1000 w/1450cc Buell, Baker 6-speed, in-progress project
Cage: '13 Mustang GT/CS with a few 'custom' touches
    Yep, can't leave nuthin' alone...

That should probably work well for me. The only exercise I get anymore is jumping to conclusions, flying off the handle, carrying things too far, dodging my responsibilities, and pushing my luck, so jumping around a manual should be even better for my cardio vascular system.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

'79 XS11 Standard, Jardine 4/1, Dyna DC1-1 Coils, 145 mains, 45 pilots, plastic floats - 25.7mm, XV920 fuel valves, inline fuel filters, speed bleeders, Mikes XS pods, spade-type fuse block, fork brace, progressive fork springs/shocks, manual petcocks, 750 FD, Venture cam chain tensioner, SS brake lines

There's no table of contents at the beginning, and I've always just kept page-downing through it 'till I found what I was looking for. So a few days ago I picked up a three ring binder and a three hole punch, and printed the doggone thing.

MY GAWD! I should have done that YEARS ago! The first thing I discovered was the INDEX - all the way in the back. I never page-downed that far before, and I didn't even know it had an index. I moved the index from the back to the front, and I can find virtually anything now in about ten seconds. Plus, it's a lot easier to take out in the garage this way.

If you'd like your own service manual, you can download it here - Yamaha XS1100 Service Manual, but I strongly advise printing it out.

          276 pages of technical goodness...
