  • Tree Lock question

I still haven't got my carbs rebuilded, and already I'm looking into other problems and ways to take up my time. My owner's manual (non original, but downloaded) says my ignition switch locks my bars from turning, but they in fact move freely regardless of key position. What is my solution? Am I looking at just a bad actuator or sensor, or do I have incorrect information, OR am I misunderstanding something?

Yeah it's a pretty blue, but just because you're old is no excuse to buy a bagger. Fortunately I have wrenches.

You need to move the bars all the way to the right or to the left, turn the ignition to off, and then push down on it and turn it a little farther left. A little bar comes out and locks the steering.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

I take that back. I just went out and checked mine - don't have to push down on the key, just turn it farther to the left. Might need to wiggle the key a little. There's two stops, and the first one locks the steering. If you turn it too far it will turn the lights on too, and it will drain the battery if you leave it like that.

        BTDT .

You have to turn the key all the way to the left to engage the lock but as you said that turns on the park lights also. One click back to the right turns off the lights but leaves the lock engaged.

That's not the way it works on my '79F. I just went out and looked at it again with a light shining on the bolt. The bolt comes out on the first notch when you turn it to the left. Turning it farther only turns the lights on.

I like easy. But I also like the fact that beardslee always has a quick accurate answer. Thanks gentlemen. Wish this forum had that "we're not worthy" bow icon.
