Well, being someone who can never leave well enough alone, I started nebbing around the fuse box today. Remembered some posts about this being a trouble spot. Took the cover off & thought " hmmm this looks nice & clean in here, what could possibly go wrong? It looks sort of like the one on my MG except that one has brass fuse holders. I'll just take these fuses out & give the holders a little squeeze so they're nice & tight." Well you guessed it, got to the second one (headlamp) and didn't the dang thing break right off like it was made of dried mud! I ran in here & checked out the posts on electrical mods & now I understand that this is the actual problem. Well the brakes are all off & I'm getting new tires. Figured while it's this far apart I may as well go ahead & pull the fenders & tank for a repaint. Snowball effect! Guess I'll just add this to the list. I'm trying to do the originallity thing so I'll probably rework the stock box with some new holders. Anyone have any sugestions that aren't already covered in the mods forum? BTW, anyone with a stock fuse box...I'd really recomend an upgrade. This bike has lead a charmed life with only 11,000mi & those holders were still crap. I'm lucky in a way that I found this now instead of going down the road.

fuse box repair
When the fuse holder broke on my 70 Special, I went to Radio Shack and bought a fuse holder that had the same style of connectors. Then I removed them from the radio shack holder and inserted them into the xs holder. So far so good, and it retains the origional fuse box.Walt

First time posting a picture. I got this one at Pep Boys. Of course, you have to be seen inside a store with all those dorky kids buying 18" diameter exhaust tips. Some fuses are a tad oversize due to my (ahem!) off-road use only headlight. The wire sizing is OK, but I'll be switching to LED lighting elsewhere to reduce the load.2010 Kawasaki Z1000

Like this. Did not have to cut anything to mount it. The cover also has a rubber gasket.Gary

Gary that looks pretty neat but your pic didn't come up for me. Probably my browser. Not to sound dumb but how do the wires attach. Solder, terminals, crimp ons?? I'm in Pa so I could probably have it in a day. I'm think'n just get one of those & save the old one. If I ever sell the bike to a originallity nut, I'll just hand it to them & let them knock themselves out.Underdog

This is on my 78E, the first box I did. I think my 79SF came out a little better.Gary

I just installed one of those fuse blocks on the $60 Gem. I previously had replaced the bad glass fuses with inline repairs one at a time as they went bad. Looked like a rats nest under the cover. This fuse block tidied things up nicely.
As a side benefit it cured another problem I was having. My turn signals were drawing an XSive amount of voltage. Voltmerer was reading 10 to 8 volts with signals flashing at idle (it would cut-out my stereo, that's why I removed it). Now it reads 12 to 11. What was wrong was the 14 g Yama wire was going through 16 g fuse wire at the fuse holder, not anymore.
I may just put the stereo back on........Pat Kelly
