As to the lurches, my carbs were rebuilt and synced about 2 months ago. Most of the reading that I have done points it at the coils are fuel flow to the carbs.

I have not looked into that part yet.

      Hey there Jeff,

With just slipon mufflers but stock headers and intake, you may not be running too lean!? Try turning the petcocks to PRIME, and then take it up to the higher rpms and see if it surges. If not, then you're loosing vacuum to the control valves on the petcocks. IF still surging, then float levels might be a tad low, set them closer to the carbs by 1mm, then recheck for surges. Also, if your plugs are pristine bleach white, you're probably too lean. If still surging, you could then try going up a couple of sizes on your mains! Of course you'll will want to check out your ignition, vacuum advance and pickup coil wires first!! I've only done the breadstick synch and mine pulls hard up and past 8.5k!!! That was both before and after changing the jets to larger sizes! HTH.
