  • ACCT Issue

I recently attempted to install an ACCT on a 1981H with 15K miles on the clock. I was unable to get it to work because it would not extend far enough to get to the first ratchet tooth and lock. It is the shorter tensioner, not the long one. Had to reinstall the manual one.

    What am I missing?

    Hey Mike,

I'm sure you had it set on "C" when installing the ACCT. SO...looks like you don't have enough wear/stretch in the chain!?

SO...I would suggest that you use a gasket or 2 to thicken the attachment to the case that will pull the plunger farther away from the guides enough to engage the 1st ratchet. Then after a year or 6-10k miles, you can then try removing the gaskets and see if it has stretched enough to engage with just 1 gasket or sealant!? JAT!

Hi Mike, Have some others with a similar issue. Not confused really, but where the stock tensioner normally rode should have a couple shiney spots where you could at least put it back in and re-set it. Rotate motot a couple times to make sure it's in its 'happy spot. Then leave it locked in place, manually rotate motor its counterclockwise rotation to JUST its 'c' location. Dont even think about backing up if a hair past......rotate again till it's spot-on, Next, unbolt the stock tensioner and remove, also not undoing shaft lock on itm Then place both side by side exactly. Move auto tensioner shaft OUT to match exactly same distance. Then look hjat Auto tensioner is in a happy notch lock location that matches mounting base of both. That's the easiest way unless you have x-ray vision. If it dont come close, get an XV tensioner off a V4 Venture 1200)(83 and later) model. They are correct length with a tad extra length extended which doesnt hurt a thing. No gasket needed, but clean any old sealer previously used COMPLETLY off and shiney both mating components. Then a thin film of permatex high temp gray on head surface only. boly it in place.......let it set an hour, then turn a couple times by hand making sure all is s.till clear. fire it up and go ride, but bettin' your gonna have to lower idle speed a bit after it warms up. Why is cause now cam timing stays in perfect sync. I'd even go back and re-sync using lean drop method and THEN sync all four carbs together...........good to go

What was the tensioner off of Mike? I have installed MANY Venture tensioners on mine and other 11's and never had a problem. Other than the 1100 bolts being too long.

I have some of the short and long ones. I am using the short one. I found the problem. It was me, not the tensioner. The ACCT is now installed successfully.

I know that is what the manual says but I can't figure out why it would matter. What reason is there to install the tension when the timing mark is on the C versus any other mark?

Because the valve spring tension can rotate the cams if in any other position causing the chain to slip and jump timing with the tensioner out. Rotating the crank to the "C" position puts the tension on the rear of the chain and slack in the front so the tensioner can be adjusted/installed without that issue.
