Fairing wiring question

I continue to have electrical problems with Addie.

Symptoms of excesive power draw from the fairing. I have checked the battery and it passes load test and shows 12.5 volts at rest.



My hand drawn diagram of the plug at the end of the pig tail that plugs into the fairing. it only plugs in one way.
with Ignition OFF: RED 12.5 v BROWN 12.5 v all others 0v ( No power.)

With Ignition ON: Red 12.5v Brown 12.5 v Yellow 12.5v Green 12v
Others No power

Engine Running: As above PLUS BLACK 3v
Indicator switch RIGHT adds BLUE 12v
LEFT RED drops .5 to 12v

= Is this right?
Fairing has headlight and indicators with double filament to be running lights.

ThaScott......sent him to you as my brain had to to many meds. floating around this late in the nite.........even havin' trouble hittin' right key stokes takes me s couple lite yrs. with spelling corrections to get anyth ing correct and in right locarion............mid morning works best for me.

Hi Scott,
Have removed fairing. Now dealing with just the wires.
So far have found the large plug in the middle of frame (below gas tank) had melted so have replaced it ( thanks tinman905) after that was not getting power to headlight so checked fuses. two blown ? Now have power to the headlight plug of main harness with ignition on.
Yellow 3 volts Green 12v black 0v
Background: the headlight has always come on with the key not delayed as it should be.
Balance of wires checked Red =12v Blue 12v

Indicator switch to Right give solid dash light (no flash with fairing removed)
Left nothing ?
Where do I go from here?

The site keeps exploding on me, Internal Server Error 500 with a 404 for the error document that explains the error. I haven't even been able to read any threads I posted to the other day! <sigh>

Check the Turn Signal bulb socket grounds in the fairing. If the grounds aren't good, they won't work.

Check the two harness connectors for the left-hand Headlight and Turn Signal controls.

The Headlight Black wire is supposed to be 0 Volts along with all the other Black wires.

Headlight voltage for the Green and Yellow wires should change when you select High and Low beam.


I hope this post makes it and the server doesn't crash again!

Thanks. I was expecting the headlight to have two power lines but each at 12v ? Maybe the left control needs to be disassembled.

Phil, you may have several sticks sticking out to stub your toes.

What's wrong depends on what changes have been made to your XS and whodunnit. If it's an '81 and the headlight used to come on with the key then someone's changed the wiring, probably bypassed the Headlight Relay, maybe the RLU too.

It's also possible the Black headlight wire is not hooked up correctly, that would force one headlight element to use the other element as a 'ground'.


<laughing> I still can't even open some of the older recent threads. They come up in the "New Posts" search but the site burps up an "out of memory" error if I click on one, then it won't talk to me at all. Oh well, it's cooled off for the evening so I think I'll go rattlecan the engine cases.
