  • This muff too tuff

Well - - I had planed to have my OEM SF exhaust cleaned up and rechromed for the Southeast Rally BUT every plating service I have taken it to, have turned it away stating the exhaust contamination in the pipes and mufflers would harm the plating solution tank. I have a MAX 4X2 now but the mufflers are now burnt-out and louder than I care for. I have contacted Max about replacement mufflers but they want what is equal to a whole new system.
Looks as if I will continue with the ear plugs.

I've heard many others report the same thing about polluting the plating tanks.

Perhaps one of the other members will know a place that accepts exhausts.

      Hey JE2,

IIRC the MAC baffles can be removed from the mufflers, and you can then wrap them with some fibeglass and put them back in to help "muffle" them a bit!

Instead of chroming....Look into JET HOT COATING....they have a color that is fairly close to chrome, and will be happy to work on USED pipes.

If the MAC baffles are removable, try using coarse stainless steel wool rather than fiberglass as packing. It won't blow out as fast....

Some Mac Baffles come out but the tapper tips do not they are solid.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will check into Jet Hot Coating.
The mufflers are tapered on both ends and getting the baffles out will require cutting the muffler housing fore or aft of the baffle and hope the baffle was not spot welded in place during manufacture.
I’ve been toying with the idea of cutting the rear off to remove the baffle, shaping a strip of sheet metal around the inside of the tapered end with a half inch revealed, rivet in place then after the baffle is back in place, rivet that back on sealing the joint with hi-temp RTV as I progress.
            Or not.

              Thanks.

I had the MAC 4 - 2 turnouts. Baffles were spot welded in place. Seems only some of there systems are removable.
