  • cam chain tensioner

saw some oil on the ground the other day... after inspection i found that the little rubber plug for the cam chain tensioner somehow fell out. i am having trouble even finding a part number for this piece in a parts 'fish'.

can anyone here help me out?

      Tensioner repair

What I have done is remove the tensioner, clean it real well with brake parts cleaner, and go to a auto parts store and ask for a small, concave type of freeze (expansion) plug that will fit inside the bore. You may have to file the outside diameter of the plug a little to get a good, snug fit. Put a little black 'silly cone' in the bore first, on the ridge on the inside, to create a seal. Then drive the plug in uintil it is resting on the ridge, and 'silly cone' over it. Fill the rest of the bore with it. Use the edge of a razor blade to scrape off, and smooth out the XS (Ha, little pun) 'silly cone', and let it cure over night. This works great.

hey thanks guys for the quick responses. i'm going to take a closer look at it this weekend. i know it has been seeping oil for some time... so i may want to replace that gasket too. though the freeze plug fix does sound pretty quick & easy.

          Tensioner

Beechfront, remember to get your timing alignment marks in place before removing the tensioner. "DO NOT" attempt to turn the engine over in any way while the tensioner is off the engine. It will lead to catastrophic consequences.

Mine drips too. The plug is still available from Yamaha. Just got one from Zonatti's but haven't installed it yet.

Damn all I did was fill mine with blue silly-cone , waited a couple of days to dry then trimmed excess with razor blade. Hasn't leaked a drop in 5 years. Then the blue bugged me so I opened the hood on my sons 85 Chevy pu and got a little greasy substance and smeared it on the blue to turn it black.
There's always a way, figure it out.
