  • Front Wheel Bearing

Recently met a guy locally who owns an XJ1100, PO cut the back of the frame off...but what are you going to do? Showed him this site last night after we pulled his wheels so he could get new tires mounted. The front wheel bearings are shot so we are going to replace them. In searching for a part number so I wouldn't have to post a question that has already been answered, I found threads that mention part #6304 2RS (20mm x 52mm x 15mm) as well as
part # 6303 2RS (17mmx x47mm x 14mm). They can't both be correct so which one am I looking for? Thanks in advance.

    Hey Billy,

Did a few searches...first the Official Yamaha parts fiche, found the OEM part #, then forum searches of that showed it compared to the 6303 RS style, used on other bikes as well. Then a recent search of recent threads and an Xsive also had the 6303 RS pair listed as part of his total list of bearings for his bike...and the XJ11 and XS11 use the same ones for the front.

Just realized that we need a proper listing of the different bearings and their numbers in the tech tips!

I went to the both the Maintenance and Repairs section first thinking I might find something. Of course it makes sense that 6303 and 6304 are both mentioned since the front and rear wheels have different size hubs and axles! Doh!

Phil thanks for listing the part numbers for everyone. And TC if you put this info in the tech tips then you won't have to spend as much time answering the same silly questions from guys like me. Besides, we all know you have nothing else to do all day but browse this site and ease the suffering of the mechanically lame..."no place to go and all day to get there" I think they say!

Seriously, another example of the wealth of information the collective on this site possesses and provides so readily. And now this new XJ owner doesn't have to fork over the $120 the bike shop wanted to replace the bearings in his front wheel. I know he will be pleased so thanks again for taking the time to help him out.

Is there any special trick to removing the meter clutch, retainer, and oil seal on the front wheel between the bearing and the speedo drive? Does it all come out as you drive the bearing out? Thanks.

Just carefully pry out the oil seal, it is reuseable, the rest should just lift out after that IIRC.
