  • Need help removing this...

    Hello all,

I'm replacing the brake hoses on my 1980 XS1100LG and I need instructions for removing the front fork logo plate to connect the new hoses...

I removed the headlight adjuster bracket and thought it would move up with a slight tap...I was wrong or I didn't tap it hard enough.

    I've attached a photo

Your thoughts will be greatly appreciated...

The forks have to be slid out of the triple tree. The headlight ears sit on top of it.

      Brake Hoses

I have replaced the hoses before. Did not have to remove that part.

Removing the handle bar clamp can be a pain. I just replaced my ears. Putting together was harder than taking a part.

        Good luck.

          Tenorman,
You do NOT have to remove that plate to replace the hoses. I just replaced mine the other day with all of that in place.

The hoses down to the calipers are pretty easy. The hose up to the master is a pain at its connection point behind the logo plate but it CAN be done with the fork ears and all the other items in position.

I turned the forks as far to the left as possible and was able to reach in with a combination wrench and get it disconnected. It was a good bit more difficult to get the new one attached. The copper crush washer wanted to keep falling off while I was trying to get the hose, bolt, and washer positioned.

My wife was able to help me out by letting me borrow her index finger to push the bolt forward lightly while I turned the nut in and held the hose in the proper orientation. You will only get a tiny little bit of movement with the wrench (1/8 turn) before you have to re-position the wrench. It probably took me 30 minutes to get all the hoses replaced which is MUCH less time than removing the forks, ears, head lamp bucket etc. It can be done, just needs patience and a delicate hand.

P.S. Watch that brake fluid. Cover all the painted surfaces as the brake fluid will EAT THE PAINT right off anything it touches. If you get some on the tank or other area.... WASH IT OFF FAST!!!!!!

That hose up to the M/C is pretty tough to get to with the badge plate in place. BTDT

              Many, many thanks!

I'll try it with the badge plate in place...

I thought there might be an easier way...

Try a 12mm swivel socket and extension, I kinda remember doing it that way.

All done with the new brake hoses....

After taking a good look at the set-up, installing the lines on the front was fairly easy.

I worked on them last night and it took about an hour and a half total including the bleeding (I used a vacuum pump).

I now have a good, hard brake and no swelling of the lines like the 35 year old ones used to do.

Many thanks to all that helped.

                  Best regards,
