  • XS1100 Macho Maroon paint Help

Hi I am trying to match up paint for my 1978 XS1100 Yamaha motorcycle. Has any anyone had their bike paint scanned and has a paint code for Macho Maroon? I want to paint my bike back to it’s original colour but I no longer have anything left of the original colour to scan. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wish I could be more helpful, but there's been multiple attempts to match Macho Maroon, none with good enough results that has given us a 'code' or mixing formula. A few have gotten semi-close, but no one has managed a duplication. And Yamaha didn't offer paint codes in those days either, so that avenue is closed. The main issue is Yamaha used some sort of pearl additive (which is what made the paint 'pop' in the sun) and it just doesn't seem to 'read' under those paint-matching machines. That's the main reason my original-owner '78 is still a project bike; matching the paint.

The one hint I can give is the OEM paint was shot over a medium gray primer and if the primer color off off so will the final color be off. I actually bought 'official' Yamaha touch-up paint (when you could still get it) and not even that matched the factory paint...

If you search this forum you'll find multiple threads on matching the OEM paint...

      good news bad news

As you read above the bad news is that there is no code, and no way to get authentic 1978 XS1100 macho maroon paint. The good news is that no one has it, and every bike has aged paint so getting close makes you as accurate as anyone else. The major parts; tank, side covers and seat cowl on each bike all seemed to age differently so attempted color matches from different parts on the same bike even came up different. I finally bought a NOS side cover and used that as the part to match.
Best of luck whether you try to match or use on of the codes/combinations listed in some of the threads on here.
I have a bike and I am not afraid to use it

        Macho Maroon

Here's the formula for Macho Maroon. Your local paint shop should be able to
decipher all the numbers and what they mean. It. actually is a 3 part paint.
with a base, mid, and clear coat. good luck!! All mixtures are for pints
        BASE COAT DDL 51197

        MIXTURE FOR BASE COAT
        DMA 362 425
        DMA 358 470
        DMA 310 498

        MID COAT DDL 51198

        MIXTURE FOR MIDCOAT
        DMA312 1
        DMA358 43

        DMA360 358
        DMA362 438
        DMA363 479
        DMA310 503
These are all for lacquer and a clearcoat on top

The above is pulled from an old post, and unfortunately the paint type (PPG 'Duracryl' acrylic lacquer) is no longer being made. But a call to them may give up a cross to a current paint.... or may not....

Who , other than you, will even know what Macho Maroon is

                        Macho Maroon paint

                        Hi MaximPhil
Yes your right. Nobody in Dawson Creek or in Tumbler Ridge where I live will know the Macho Maroon colour but I am not trying to impress anybody, I am trying to relive teenage memories. Then I will pass that bike on to my daughter for her to make her own memories.
