Hi All, Ive got a carb situation with my 80 mns, I cleaned the carbs or should I say triple cleaned them, and now have them back apart since cyls one and two would not run. I have good spark. Ive got the three tiny holes near the throttle plate flowing good. Every other hole seems to be flowing ok now. I want to know, what is the brass tube on the new carbs , that is in front of, and to the right of the pilot jet. I am getting flow thru everything but that, but that is flowing to its base where there is a little hole, is there any other communication that needs to be cleaned thru that, I am thinking this has something to do with pilot system, or the enrichener, but there doesnt seem to be any holes except that one at the base of the brass tube, does it go anywhere else??? All four seem to be the same way, and since three and four are running fine, I am thinking that maybe this thing doesnt go anywhere else. My clymers manual only shows the 79 carbs, which dont have that tube.

Hey Tom,
Look at this thread for info on how the Enrichener circuit and other circuits flow.
http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...t=carb+anatomy
However the Enrichener circuit should not keep the cylinders from firing once the engine is warmed up...it's just for being able to provide extra fuel needed with a cold engine. SO...there's a good chance your pilot circuit is still somewhat clogged??
But with #3 and 4 working, they are paired with the same fuel supply "T" fitting, so you need to be sure that the carbs are actually getting fuel!!! Kinked fuel line? Clogged "T" fitting, clogged float needle seat, or even damaged petcock.

I read that thread,,,,,,????
I still dont know if that brass tube communicates with anything other than ,, the hole at the base of it. Do I need to do anything more with it, or is the flow at the base, the end of it.Bikes Now.

If you can take a spray can of Carb cleaner, and spray from the hole through the tube, your good. As TC said, if 1&2 are not working, it's a feed problem between the tank and the carbs, 95% of the time.Ray Matteis

yes thats why ive torn them down again
I saw from another post that its called the enrichener pipe.
My T fittings are flowing for sure.
My needle and seat are clean , cleaned, and seem to be working alright but, then again I dont have x ray vision.
I am thinking that I have two different types of filters, and maybe the one on that side is bad although I do have clear fuel lines and can see some fuel flowing. I will change that filter out.
The petcock is flowing, I checked that out for sure.

ok so the tube doesnt do anything,,,but,,just asking
ok so the tube doesnt do anything but transfer pressure of fuel from the base of the bowl, and transfer it to the area near the meeting points of the bowl and the carb,,,,,,,,that tube does not communicate anywhere else in the carb then?????????????? just asking,,,,Bikes Now.

The tube feeds the enrichment circuit. When you pull the "choke" lever, it adds more fuel to the engine so it starts easier when cold. It takes the fuel up to the upper part of the carb, and into the plunger body of the enrichment circuit. The vacuum is what draws it up, once the "choke" lever is pulled open to the first or second stop.Ray Matteis

I knew it had to be sumpin
Ok, well, all four of them are plugged solid apparently, since absolutly nothing is going anywhere but out that hole at the base of the tube.Bikes Now.

more info
re the brass tube,,,,Is this an item, that is safe to put a wire into to clear it.????? Since these carbs were soaked for three days in pine sol, and the brass tubes are still totally plugged, maybe pine sol isnt so hot. Ive got lots of spray carb cleaner, but its all flying out the hole at the base. Any body got any ideas on how to clear this thing. Is there a spot, at the other end of that circuit where I can shoot cleaner in??Bikes Now.

I use a fine wire to clean them. If you look at the hole in the base, you should see a jet pressed in with a fine hole in it. Try to get a wire that will go in the jet easily. Hard to find, but it's the easiest way unless you have the jet cleaning wires from ebay or a specialty speed shop. What you may want to try is keep them upright, and pour some B12 or Seafoam into each bowl. Let it set for a day, and try again.Ray Matteis

jet cleaning wires
Ok, I do have the official jet cleaning wires, so will try that and B12 and see where that takes us.Bikes Now.

Hey Tom,
That brass pipe should line up with a pipe going up the outside of the carb body. IF you still have the carbs banked together, you will want to PULL the CHOKE/ENRICHENER lever OUT to open the pathway from that tube UP to the plunger chamber. If you take the vac. diaphragm slide out, then you'll see the AIR path that goes at about a 45 degree from the diaphragm chamber down past the choke plunger chamber, and then thru that large hole into the throat of the carb on the engine side in front of the butterflies!
Aside from the carb brass tube....the float bowl that the tube sticks into sucks fuel up thru that port....it is supplied by the little pressed in jet down in the bottom of the float bowl....so along with making sure that the brass tube pathway in the carb body is open and flowing, the jet and port/tube in the bowl also needs to be open otherwise the enrichener circuit won't be able to get any fuel and won't feed the carb/engine anyways!

no where is where it took me
Ok TC, So you are saying that it communicates with the kind of large angled hole downstream of the throttles. The angle large hole is open at some point since spray goes thru that. And I have the enrichener open at the area under the diaphragm, however, I cant get spray to go thru there to the brass tube at all, I have that sitting in CC right now on all four. The jet and chamber in the float bowl are clear, CC goes thru without restriction.
I got the wire out,, its only 020 diameter, it stops dead at the bottom of the tube as seen from the bowl area. Also, there is another hole, in the underneath of the diaphragm, it appears to be a tube that commuinicates with the pilot system, none of them are open at all to CC being sprayed thru. I poked a wire into it, stops it dead about a half inch in,, but that may be the elbow in the tube, in any case carb cleaner does not go into the pilot area from there. Anyone know what that is sposed to be for anyways. It would be in the vaccum area under the diaphragm.Last edited by yamtom; 07-27-2015, 07:36 PM.Bikes Now.

ultrasonic cleaner
Is there anyone on the list that has an ultrasonic cleaner??? I am thinking this may be the best solution to these tiny channels that apparently wind their way in such a way that no wire is gonna reach the gunk. These carbs have already sat three days in pine sol, so that wont do it.Bikes Now.

I, too, had plugged enrichener tube feeds. I pulled the bowls, soaked them in good carb cleaner for a full day, then put the little red WD 40 'straw' in the nozzle of the c. cleaner and the little brass tube, put it all in a plastic bag ( so it wouldn't go all over), and sprayed the tubes clear. This may have been your method and failed, but it worked for me.79 F
