  • Repair of Stator and Field Coil

So found out after a 60 mile ride that the charging system just doesnt work.
Had to push/pop start the bike to get it home (several times)

Opened manual, checked resistances on both stator and field coil - Values are so far off i cant even believe it, 0.4 is the number to look for and mine is pulling back 25 on the 3 white wires

3.5 is called for on 2 pin plug, getting 50

Pulled both items off bike and re-checked, same numbers.

Anyway to repair these or have the 35 yr old items just junk now?

I do not think they would be easy to repair. You can probably find a good used set real cheap from a member or off of EBAY. I would also check your connectors to make sure they are clean and making good a connection.

Here is one for a 1978.

Never heard of both going bad at the same time. One or the other but not both.

      They usually short to ground.

I think that each white wire is 25 volts before the regulator-rectifier adjusts it.

So my multimeter (harbor freight) was doing something weird
Cleaned all connections then saw a post where somebody put the 2 leads of the MM together and to subtract that reading, so after doing that both the stator and field coil are in spec.
Following up to reg/rec tried to unplug connections and it was stuck together!
After some good force to pull it apart found the black wire had melted a bit into the connector, going to test this next but the reg/Rec is probly bad by looks of its connector

Did you test both coils for short to ground?

Melted connectors in the charging system is pretty common. That doesn't necessarily mean the regulator is bad either. Replace that connector, then clean all the rest and make sure your grounds are good too. At that point recheck the system, that may be all it needs...

+1.....the melted connector is usually just a sign of a bad connection there.
