  • Backrest slide lock repair

I have an original rack w/adjustable back rest.
I have not tried to loosen/adjust the backrest slide into the rack for 20+ years.

    The lock/retainer looks like:

After some PB Blaster and an overly enthusiastic son with vice grips...
I now have one that looks like this:

The stud was snapped off but I have the holding bracket and the knurled nut (complete with still imbedded stud portion)

    Any advice on replacement/repair?

    Thx

    Repair

If it has been ok for this long? Use a propane torch and heat the broken stud. Let it cool and it should removed easily. Purchase a stud at a big box or auto parts store.

After the heat, let it cool for just about two minutes and then use a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF on it. I keep this mix in an oil can, and it WILL get through the rust, and allow you to take the stud out without killing the rack.
It will probably take about 20 minutes to work, but a beer while waiting doesn't hurt.

        Broken off bolt

        Other magic remedies include:

Heat the stud. When hot, touch a candle onto it and melt wax into the threads. Shortly thereafter, remove the stud.

A machine shop owner told me of this one. But I have not tried it.

I have the same backrest, you will have to grind off the old one and weld a new one back on there and as for the nut what the others have said should work.

            Thanks Guys

I have not tried the removal of the broken stud yet.
My bigger concern is the lack of rotation of the knurled nut.
The unbroken stud on the opposite side of the rack is impossible to turn as well. Force will probably result in breaking the stud on that side.

            The missing picture...

you can see the partial stud piece in the nut above.

Ultimately I need to replace 1 stud and clean/refurbish the original nuts (both sides).
            or
New studs and matching nuts for both sides.

I am soaking the nut with the partial stud in Ray's magic potion now. I will check it in the AM. The attached, good nut on the other side is another issue.
It was given another shot of PB Blaster.

Once I know if the original nuts can be salvaged/reused, I progress to the studs.
