  • Special Brake Caliper - Clymer Wrong?

    XS Folks,

    My front calipers seem to be hanging up a little. I'm concerned that I do not have everything put together correctly. BUT, I think the Cylmer manual is wrong.


    The caliper(s) have a recess to accept the O-ring. So I think they have the washer and the O-ring reversed in the manual. When I took these apart initially they were installed with the o-ring in the caliper recess provided and the washer was on top. Although the PO of my bike did a lot of "REDNECK" engineering, I don't think this item was screwed up.

    Is Clymer correct?


    Goofy Tapered Special Front Pads:
    Also, I purchased a complete set of brake pads on-line. When the pads came they were in three individual packages with no labeling Front L or Front R. The rears were pretty self explanatory.

    I called the seller and they told me which part# was F-R and which was F-L. Can anyone tell me how to tell which goofy tapered set is supposed to go on which side. I'd like to 100% confirm I got that right and the CSR at the seller was correct. There is nothing on the board about how to tell visually which is which.

    It's wrong. The packing goes under the washer.



    What is the part number of your brake pads? You should be able to look them up to find which is left and which is right.

    Clymer books are great when they aren't wrong. You should download the factory service manual.

      As Marty said, the O ring goes in the slot provided in the caliper and the washer above it, so yes that diagram is wrong, no big surprise.

        Thanks. I figured it was wrong. I should have checked the Yamaha diagram.

        I purchased a "Full Set" on Volar Pads on Evil-Bay. When the package arrived there were THREE separate individually wrapped pairs: VBP177 (Front), VBP 180 (Front), VBP 181 (Rear). There was NO instructions or other indication on the packaging only part numbers. I did a thorough search and could not find any info including the Volar web-site.

        I called the seller and they informed the that the 177's were left side and the 180's were right side. The girl I spoke to was definitely not familiar with the products. I had to explain to her in detail what I meant by left & right. I'm not sure her light bulb was really turned on.

        Is there any visual indication what these should look like installed/new? One pad is tapered at the top, the opposing is tapered at the bottom. It seems the OUTSIDE shoes (piston side) are tapered at the top.

          Without taking my caliper apart, I believe that when the pads are properly installed, the leading side will have the fat side closest to the fork. I think they're tough to put in backwards.

          You still have master cyl and lines to install, correct?

            The pads are tapered top of the pad toward bottom or bottom toward top of the pad. You're right that they would not be too easy to mix up as an individual pair, but could be very easy to mix left caliper to right caliper.

            I installed the MikesXS master yesterday. It feels good!
            The lines are due today. If they show I'll immediately install them.

            However, we're about to take a ride. I wanted to wait till a respectable time before I started the loud one.

                That breakdown shows the outer (piston side) pad is thick on the TOP and thin on the Bottom. That's how I have 'em so it must be correct. Thank you for helping (AGAIN) Marty
