  • E motor/SF frame

Anyone ever put an E motor complete into an SF frame. Can't help but think this would be one peppy little ride. 16 inch tire married with the aggressive timing and advance of the E would make it a very exciting 3/8 th of a mile.
My question concerns the frame, would an SF frame carry the full on torque and if not, would the 850 final drive be the easiest counter to the excessive torque and fuel consumption?

The engine swap is easy, and there are no worries about the frame. The difference between the E and F is slight, and internal to the engine. I put an 80 special engine into a 79 standard with no problems.
As far as the difference in power, you probably will not be able to tell. At most, you MAY get 0.2 to 0.4 seconds out of it, but that would be the max.

I have had an F engine in my SG frame for several years now. The older engines are a lot quicker once you get used to that cam stumble at about 3K. The E I had a while back was even quicker than the F engine, seat of the pants.

You should be fine, do it! Just remember the frame is over thirty years old like every other XS11 frame.

Changing the final drive will change the engine's fuel consumption but you cannot change the engine's torque. You can change how the engine's torque affects the frame and the drivetrain by changing the transmission (not possible in an XS/XJ1100), middle drive and final drive ratios.

A lower drivetrain ratio will multiply the engine's torque: long lever and two milliseconds in 1st gear to hit 8,500 RPM and burn the rear wheel in place or flip over backwards and turn everything into a grenaded pretzel!

A higher drivetrain ratio will divide the engine's torque: short lever and two seconds in 1st gear to burn up the clutch trying to hit 8,500 RPM and burn the rear wheel in place but it's highly unlikely to flip over backwards or make anyone drop a bag of pretzels.

          Lol

Well, I'm over 30 years old now too; so, bending the frame is getting harder and harder. Go figure.
Greg, It would certainly make me pucker before I roll on in first. But it's not for me. A guy has a sick bike, and I could install a spare motor that only has 10k miles on it, but it's an E, and his frame is an SF. But what's worse, he has never ridden a bike before and this one was a gift. I don't want to be charged with 2 cd degree murder while trying to do a favour.

            Oh, it's for a friend!

Put an '850 drive on it, fasten a sparkplug to the frame with a hose clamp then put the #2 sparkplug wire on it and your friend will have an XS850.

Now that's some funny sheet But you forgot to tell him to take out #2 plug, so that he gets some sound effects.
