Happy Belated 4th of July. I tried to get to the lakefront for Milwaukee's fireworks display but there was so much traffic crawling at a snails pace my XJ overheated the engine started to stumble and quit on me. I pressed the starter twice to no avail there was a parking lot close I pushed the bike into the lot and let it sit for an hour started her up and headed to the expressway to get some air moving around the engine.

I just put 20-50w oil in and it is doing a good job, although I now no when there is more noise coming from the top end (which went away when it cooled) she is getting too hot. Now back to the question at hand. There is no repair manual for the XJ at least I cannot find one. Is the XS repair manual a useful substitute? I have copies of the service and owners manual which are helpful but I really need to grease and lube the driveline as well as need to replace the wheel bearings since after 33 years and 11,800 miles the grease has got to be used up, grease is not like wine and cheese it doesn't get better with age. I looked at Dennis Kirk all the bearings they have listed say they "May work" which doesn't leave me with much confidence. There is no statement to this when I went to Bike Bandits website and so far I have had no problems ordering from them.

Any thoughts comments or suggestions?

The drive shaft and final drive splines most definitely need to be cleaned and re-greased.

FWIW, with only 11K+ miles, the wheel bearings may not need to be replaced. They may simply need a good "clean and re-grease" as well.

Once you check them, it will be immediately evident whether or not they need replacing.

It occurred to me that you may be referring to the Clymer '78-'81 XS1100 Service/Repair/Maintenance Manual.

If so ... then yes, you can use it as a reference while servicing the drive shaft/final drive and wheel bearings on your '82 XJ.

Hey MW,

You've already been given the download link above. The general mechanical parts of the drivetrain for the XS and the XJ are the same. As stated, that low milieage should allow the wheel bearings to be in decent shape. The front ones should be sealed. The LEFT REAR one can be disassembled by removing the seal, then the inner race, clean and repack and reassemble. But first check the bearing for notchiness....the inner race should rotate smoothly within the bearing...you may need to clean before being able to properly check due to breakdown of the old grease. IF found smooth, then repack. If not, then replace....recent threads have revealed that the required bearing is STILL available just not from Yamaha or Bike stores! Search eBay for NA5904, as well as recent threads....another member has just recently commented about his access to a bearing supplier, and will be able to report availability and pricing soon next week. Meantime, a bearing provider sells them on eBay for $16.99 + ~8.00 S&H. SYI brand, true all NEEDLE BEARING, not mixed roller and needle bearing.

Also, don't forget the WHEEL HUB to final drive splines as well as the Final Drive to Driveshaft....clean and regrease.

Hi MWS,
If the drive shaft on the XJ has the grease nipple DO NOT bother to put any grease in it as it does not go anywhere near where the grease is needed You will need to disassemble and grease the splines in there.
