  • Intake Valve O-Rings?

    XS Folks,
    Quick question.....

I'm rebuilding my XS11 head and the full engine gasket kit includes eight small O-rings (12mm +/-). The kit came with NO instructions and I can not determine where the heck these are supposed to be used? I checked on-line and one of the pages I found refers to these as: Kit Includes "(8) Intake valve O-rings"

I thought they might be for the base of the head bolt shafts but there are 12 of those. I have not pulled the Jugs so I don't know it there are any down there anyway. I've checked every page of the Clymer manual related to; head, valves, etc. can't find a thing.

The only thing on this motor there are precisely eight(8) of are the valves. Where the devil are these supposed to go? Mistaken O-rings for some other motor?

I have the eight(8) valve "SEALS" and am about to install those and get the valves all put back in......

Where in the world do these eight(8) 12mm (+/-) O-rings belong?

    Thanks a bunch,
    KURT

      Somesuch,
I'm thinking the valve guide needs to go metal-to-metal with a press or shrink fit into the head. I can't pull those at home anyway. They're also referred to as "Intake Valve O-Rings". If that is true, and INTAKE is a good word, I'd only need four not eight if it had something to do with the stem or guide on the intake side.
      Still baffled......

No o-rings goes on the valves, just the valve stem oil seal.

I am not sure why they put them O-rings in the kit. Normally you do not replaced the valve guides. If I rem from long ago each valve guide has a o-ring before pressing them in.

They are for the valve guides, I guess I should not phrase my answer as a question next time

                Bill & XS Guys,
Thank you for the replies. I guess valve guides are the only place that would require eight(8) identical O-rings of this size. I'm certainly not capable of (or willing to try) pulling guides at home. Strangely, they provide O-rings for the valve guides but no: new crush washers for the oil line, no O-ring for the CCT, no intake gaskets (made my own), etc. Sort of a crappy "Full Engine Kit" but the kit was basically the cost some are asking for just a head gasket so I guess it's like I got a head gasket and all the rest of the gaskets provided for free.

I have all the new stem seals in, the valves lapped, and everything re-assembled, just waiting on a replacement head gasket as the one in the kit was damaged in shipping.

                Thanks again,
                Kurt

the valve/seat seal with varsol to ensure no leaks right?
