  • Splitting the engine...

To Split or not to Split...That is the Question.

I need to replace the bearing that goes onto the clutch shaft (AKA Main Shaft) on my new '78 XS1100E. Do I have to split the case apart to get the bearing out of there? It's part number 93305-20505-00 --- BEARING (B5205) on the Yamaha website. 10 in the Transmission picture. Can I just push it out the right side? I haven't been able to get it to move yet...

Thanks guys...I'm glad I did the 2nd gear fix, I never would have known about the bearing otherwise.

    Hey there HepCat,

Hate to tell you this, but there is a pin/positioning notch on the outside of the bearing case along with a circlip holding it in place so it won't slide out, so splitting the cases is the only way to get to it. The parts diagram doesn't show this pin but it's described and shown in the manual.

But the good news is that you shouldn't have to pull out/off the pistons or crankshaft to work on it. Will need to be careful around the crankshaft, the seals and bearings!
