  • XS1100 Gas Tank Emblem Badge Finish Discrepancy

Hello all. I bought a set of NOS gas tank emblems for my '79 XS1100SF that I'm restoring. The part numbers are stamped on the back. One of them is part #2H7-24161-00, which I believe was sold for the left side of the tank. However, I believe they fit both sides. It is the original design used on '78 and '79 models that has the tiny outline around the word "YAMAHA", and has the bright yellow-gold finish. The other one has the part #2H7-24162-00 and has an "R" stamped on the back, which I believe was for the right side.
Anyway, the latter one I mentioned is designed exactly the same except that it has a darker finish more like gold-copperish rather than the yellow-gold. They are both in excellent condition. The gold-copperish one does not appear to be aged and was in the original package. I can't imagine a different manufacturing run having so much of a different finish tint.
Anyone have any ideas why? I'll probably sell the darker one because I have a used yellow-gold one to match with my new yellow-gold one for now. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If it's for the SF, buy new ones for the SG/SH. They're slightly different than the earlier ones, but they'll fit, be new, and match.

Thanks Marty. That is an option, but I'm trying to keep it original. The SG SH gold ones are readily available. Caveat: you will see many on ebay that are chrome and black. These are Yamaha golf cart emblems. Many are bought cheap and sold high on ebay for bikes. They screw right on the bike gas tanks. They look pretty good, but don't match the gold side cover emblems. Thanks again.

No reference to the golf cart emblems intended. You can buy replica SF badges for about $100 cast in metal. There are a few vendors over here, or directly from the source in Australia.

          tn11,

          Check out these two sites:

          Reproduction Decals

          Badge Replicas

Yes, they are pricey ... but if you want the exact original look, it may be worth it to you.

Thanks for the info guys. I forgot about Diablo Supply. It's a shame I now have one perfect yellow-gold and one copper-gold. Most I've seen are more yellow-gold. I still have a long way to go on mechanical repairs so I'll keep watching for one NOS that will match. I picked up a NOS seat and a used original grab bar already which are pretty rare for the SF.

If you know anyone that wants to buy the gold-copperish '78-'79 NOS emblem then send them my way. Price is $20 + $5 shipping. That's what I paid. Thanks again.
