  • oil leak

Hey all. My XJ11 is finally back on the road after some new parts. After a ride the other night I sat on the bike with it running and noticed some smoke in front of the headlight. I think I have an idea of where it is coming from. I took a video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AESZYuh86U Warning LOWER YOUR VOLUME. So. How do I fix it and where else could it be coming from. I am newer to the XJs. Thanks so much I truly appreciate any insight. Also what should I be getting in terms of MPG. I am around 20-22 which I feel in ridiculously low. I recently changed the oil and filter.

    Oil Leak

From what I could see, your cam chain tensioner had oil dripping from it. But really, you need to power wash that dude so you can see better. Not sure what other type of work you've done on it but it wouldn't hurt to check the head bolts for torque and the valve cover. These are always good places to start.

Does need a bath so you can tell where the oil is coming from. Looks like it is the cam chain adjustor (gasket/O-ring/seal).

I cleaned the entire engine with Gunk engine degreaser gel. It looks a ton times better. It appears to be leaking from the screw above that hole.

          On the tensioner

there is a small o ring around the bolt that can be replaced but normally that isn't the issue. You'll find the plug at the end of the tensioner is probably cracked and worn. Several repairs for this are listed here on this site but the best fix is to throw the OEM adjuster in the garbage and install a new Auto adjuster. Threads are available for this too. Numerous options are out there. I always use the 83 ventre but some like the V-max etc.
