  • Head light adjustment "aiming" screws

I have a 1980 standard. It is missing both of the headlight adjustment aiming screws (top and bottom). I bought it this way the PO had tape inside the housing to prevent it from moving - what a disaster. I have reviewed the schematic and it looks like there is a long bolt a spring and a nut for the top and a long bolt, a spacer, a spring and a nut for the bottom. Does anybody know what size bolts these are? I tried the search function and I could not find anything.

I bought a package of universal springs from Princess Auto so I am ok for the springs. The headlight flops around a bit, I am afraid that it will fall out. Is it ok to remove the headlight? Does the system need the resistance to operate or will running without a light damage the electrical system? Thanks

So,...the plot thickens. Today after work I pulled the headlight bezel of and looked at the tape in more detail. Turns out the headlight is an automotive type (GE h6054) taped into the headlight bucket with some super sticky nasty tape.

Is it safe on the electrical system to ride without a light until I can figure this out?

Yes, it's safe for the electrical system but if you're riding without a headlight, watch out for the ol' SMIDSY:-

          Hi 1887,
There are very limited options for replacing the rectangular head light of the standards. However as you are forced to figure something out I suggest you search this site for past discussions of the topic. Some have tried LED and HiD conversions with varying sucess. Many of us will be inerested in what you manage to do. The original head light was mediocre when new and the reflector
          is now 35 years old
I recall JeffH had a headlight wrapped in chicken wire on his bike for a season so he could ride it while he fixed the fairing etc.
Princess Auto have some cheap lights that may not show you much of the road in the dark but will let oncoming traffic see you.

Yes I read the retrofit by CrazySteve, it is a great write up the only problem is I don't have the original bracketry, I just have the bucket and a non OEM rectangular headlight. I can always stuff it back together with tape (like it was).

I would check and see if you can find a replacement. Go to the parts sales section and the wanted to buy section.

                Good luck.

Actually a kind member pm'd with an offer to sell me one. If I have to buy one I think I might just convert to round (I know this irks those standard purists out there).

Do you have to change the bucket?

My standard bucket is fine, no issues there. If I convert to a round light I will obviously have to change the bucket, light etc.

Maybe I need to clarify. I have the outer bucket, I have the bezel but I don't have an aftermarket headlight and there is no bracketry on the light. There would be nowhere for these screws to screw into.

So I bought a used standard headlight assembly of eBay for $25 (included shipping). It came with everything; the bezel, the screws, springs, nylon nut blocks, bucket and of course the light (H4 style). I reckon that's a pretty good deal. I installed it (it's nice to have a light again) today and it works pretty good (for a 35 year light). I will run this set up until I can find a good round headlight conversation (I know, sacrilege), maybe one of those truck-lite 7" led's

                              That was a good deal!

Going to a round headlight isn't sacrilegious but the rectangular headlight puts out a better light pattern. It doesn't mean doodley either way during the day but it's nice when gets, you know, dark.
