  • Tank I was going to use???

I had a spare tank with the bike I bought that was in better shape on the outside. There was something inside the tank so I removed the inside gage cover. There was a short chain inside the tank and a lot of some coating the tank was coated with. Does these tank come with a coating inside the tank? If not someone tried to coat the inside with not good results. Is there anyway to remove this coating? It is flaking all over the inside.

If I have to use the tank that was on the bike it has a big dent on the top of it. Who is a good dent repair and painter around GA? I could try to paint it myself but it might not come out like I would want but the dent has to go.

    Thanks.

OEM there was no coating. Any coating is from a PO.

Chain inside is not a good way to clean rust or flaking. There is a delicate drain tube inside that can break.

Acetone may help dissolve the coating. Its cheap enough to try a quart.

PM me your email and I can send pics of a nice Cardinal Red 79 Special tank I have for $150+ shipping. If thats too rich I think Greg has some decent ones maybe cheaper. This still has good original paint so its more plus I have the matching OEM sidecovers with latch intact

Will the standard tank fit? I thought it was too long.

I ran a std tank on my 81 special. It did fit a little tight on the front of the seat but not a problem

Its not really the tank that's too big, but the nose of a Special seat extends to cover the sloped curve of a Special tank. If you stick a Standard tank on the nose hase to curl up against the tank very snug. It can be forced if needed.

I have successfully dealt with a failed tank liner. Read about it here:

So, Marty, do you think you needed to tumble the tank in the dryer, or would the phosphoric acid have gotten rid of all the rust?

Oh.. and cute Christmas Saran Wrap.. lol.

How does that Coswell liner seem to be doing?

I need to get my tank done. I am confessed about what is the best to remove the liner.

                      What does everyone thing?

                        Tod,
The phosphoric acid would have gotten rid of all the rust. I had old liner residue in there too. The tumbler media got all the crap broken free. The Caswell liner is good.

                        Bill,
What you use to dissolve the old liner depends upon what it is. Acetone worked on mine.
