  • Reproduction master cylinder reservoir

I'm in process of collecting the parts to restore a couple 78 XS1100's. However both have the plastic master cylinder reservoir that looks chalky and cracked from sitting in the sun. I took one apart and drew a cad model of the white plastic housing and the lid and was planning on machining a short run of these out of white UHMW and Black UHMW for the lids. I guess my main question is would there be any interest from any members in purchasing any of these?
Due to the setup complexity and the fact I hate cleaning plastic out of my machines this would most likely be a one time run.

    Mike's XS has this already.

    It's almost $70.

Which bowl are you going to reproduce? Specials and standards don't share. What is your price point?

I was going to do a run of the standard ones. The sample I have is from a 1978 standard. I guess I could pull off the one on my 80 MNS and do a drawing of that as well. Does anyone know how many different types of reservoirs were used?

There's three types; the '78, some '79 standard used one, the later standards used one the same external shape but it lacked the brass inserts for the cover and is held on with long studs like the Specials rather than the internal plate used on the early standards, and the 'slanted' Special one.

The set-up for the 'standard' reservoir would be basically the same for both types, and a '78 type could be modified to work on the later standard bikes, but not vice versa. If you could hit a reasonable price point, I think you could sell more than a few...

I know I would buy a few if the price is not too high. The stock ones look like crap. I am sure more than just a few would be sold.

I'm wondering how that UHMW will hold-up to brake fluid? We use it on the machines I build, and there has been times where it got ate-up by some of our cleaning chemicals . . .

Or if not worried about being spotted, it could be painted black. I just hate that cloudy worn and ready to bust look of the stockers.

Well I also have an 80 midnight special and an 80 standard so it looks like I would have a working sample of all three styles. I did think about making them out of aluminum, but I kind of like being able to see my brake fluid level anytime. I guess I could also machine a pocket for an oil sight glass.

                          Joe,

I have heard that under the right conditions, UHMW is prone to warping. Would that be a concern for this kind of application?

BTW, I also would be interested in the aluminum M/C reservoir ...

                            I'd be interested

In one for a '79 Special and one for an '80 MNS.
Plastic or AL, but preferably plastic so I can read the fluid level.

I just ended up spraying my '78 chalky one with some Rustoleum Metallics spray. Been lookin sharp for years now. Since I change my brake fluid every spring and check it during the summer, its no biggie for me.

But, a new shiny opaque plastic one would be awesome too!
