Exhaust Nuts

Is there a reason Yamaha used the barrel nuts on the exhaust? The ones that were on mine were really bad looking. I replaced them with SS nuts and washers.
I saw someone on Ebay selling one barrel nut for $10.

Yep... The stock head pipe flanges has recesses for the nuts and a standard nut won't allow you to get a wrench on them. If you have an aftermarket exhaust with no recess you can use standard nuts...

I have stainless acorn nuts on mine. They were slathered with plenty of anti-seize compound before installation.

My pipes are Jardines. That is why I did not see a reason.

Put some anti-seize on those nuts. Stainless has a strong tendency to gall when used like that.

Sorry I'm late for this discussion but I purchased the Allen Nuts from here:

for $2.52 each. They worked great.

What year did you use- 1978? I did not see 1980.

I bought them for an 81 XS1100SH. That model is not listed but they worked and looked fine.

The '78-79 OEM exhaust nuts were chrome and needed a 6mm allen wrench. The '80-81 nuts were only zinc plated and needed a 8mm wrench.
