anyone running open pipes and pods? what jets are best?

Currently building a bobber out of my 79 xs1100sf. It currently has cobra pipes on it but the po laid it down and crushed one of the silencers. I like the way it looks with open headers. Also would like to run pods to eliminate the ugly air box. What jet sizes do you reccomend? Or can I get away with stepping the needles? I've done plenty of work on mikunis before, but this is my first 1100. Hoping someone has already gone though the headache of figuring out what jets run best in this configuration so I don't have to fudge around. Thanks in advance!

I would venture to say you 'Mikuni experience' is with dirt bikes, since you've referanced the needle clip positioning as a KNOWN plug burn adjustment. CV carbs are a TOTTALLY different 'animal. What your wanting to 'delete' to will NEVER give you a smooth running bike, ever, period. As it is, your gonna be have a jet collection a dealer would be proud of, mains and pilots....and still not be right. The CV carbs operation DEPEND on critical vacuum draw points and rpm ranges. Deviate from that ditching the specificlly designed air-box, and no back pressure straight exhaust.......good luck, your gonna need all you can muster.......and the 2x4's you have there......well, if your considering hard-tailing....things have gone from bad to worse. If you are wanting the 'bobber' look, least do all the mechanical functioning correctly.

I had the baffle fall out of my Jardine on the Blue Ridge Parkway a few years back. It was LOUD!

Lots of enlightening threads on all of the following:

If you run pods use velocity stacks to straighten the airflow.

If you run open pipes baffle them to get some back pressure.

If you hard tail it make sure the drive shaft is straight.

As for jets, start with stock and read the plugs to adjust from there.

Make sure your complete electrical system, grounds, plug in connecters, switch gear contacts, ignition switch contacts,etc. are clean, clean clean.

Also before you try any carb adjustments your valves will most likely need adjustment.

Welcome to the site! As some have said, the CV carbs do NOT like open pipes! Schming has a great list to start with. I would look at something to give a little back pressure, otherwise you will be chasing your tail trying to get it to run properly. On a 650 years ago, I used a wave bent length of sheet metal with 3/8" holes punched in it as baffles, and it worked.
I can see the 2X4 is just to keep the rear end up until the shocks get cleaned up.

Using wood parts seems to be all the rage now

I ran open pipes and pods for a minute. No pings, back fires, etc. However it did lose power so I installed baffled tips which brought her back to life. I do not know what the long term ramifications would have been though.

Well this is why I'm asking. Actually I've built a Suzuki gs850 and a Honda cb750 which use the same carb setup (only slightly different) so I know its possible to Dom as far as running the pods its totally possible to set up a bike on pods with no I'll side effects, its all in how you do it. I wasn't looking for a scolding or a lesson on how not to build my bike. Its not my first rodeo. What I was asking is has anyone done it and how big did they have to go with the jets. As far as baffles the pipes I have are 4x2 cobra that had removable baffles and they ran awesome with the baffles out. Deleting the back half of the pipe for looks shouldn't compromise it much I don't think. As far as valve clearances and such the motor has already been gone over when it was out. And I have the swing arm set straight. Again not my first rodeo. Just wondering if anyone has a good starting point with jets before I spend loads of time.

Hey Dave- I have a buddy, and fellow forum member who ran open pipes. It was so loud, UofM Police told him to muffle them or face a ticket. Secondly, it ran like poop.
