  • Where to buy brake parts

    Both my front and rear pads are dragging. I read up on the spooge hole thread and performed the recommended service. They were not too bad, I could fit a small guitar string down the hole. I cleaned them the best I could and reassembled with new fluid.

    I checked the caliper pistons and 2 out of 3 were very bad, the other (left front) was just kinda bad. I cleaned them up with scotch brite and put everything back together. It is still dragging.

    I am going to purchase new pistons and caliper rebuild kits. Parts N More seems to have the best price, has anybody ever used them, any thoughts? My caliper rubber boots are in great shape, has anybody ever reused them? (this will save a few bucks, I will only have to buy the seal). Also should I bite the bullet and purchase two MC rebuild kits?

    Save some more money. The dragging is probably corrosion BEHIND the seal. You can pull the seal out, bend a small, flat blade screw driver, and use it to clean the grove the seal fits into. For the seal itself, use your fingernail and clean brake fluid to get all the buildup off. If you have pitting in the middle, working part of the piston, it will need to be replaced.

      Hi 1887,
      Pars & More are a reputable supplier. Parts are aftermarket but reasonable quality in my experience. Advanage to us is they are in Stratford ON so no border to cross As Ray sayas you may just need to clean what you have.

        Thanks guys, I appreciate the info. Yes, there is pitting in the center part of the piston, so it looks like I am going to have to get some new ones. I will order them .

          Whoa! Where is the corrosion? If it isn't on the sides of the piston, it doesn't matter. I also agree with Ray on the problem. Clean it up and you're golden!

          If you replace the pistons, go ahead and spring for the stainless steel ones. If you have a G standard, your pistons are a match for the 1977 and later XS650 front pistons.

          I guess if I was going that far I'd put in the kits. Parts n' More is probably as good as anyplace. The kit for the master cylinder won't have the packing for the bottom of the reservoir. You'll have to source that locally.

            yes, the sides of the pistons were corroded, now that I cleaned them they are pitted.

              That being the case, if it was me and the bike was mine, I'd buy the stainless pistons. I'd also put kits in them. I would also replace the brake lines, if you haven't already. The FSM recommends brake line replacement every four years. Go through the brakes all the way and be done with it. Then, all you have to do is replace the fluid every couple of years and you're good for another 35 years! Excepting friction pads, of course.
