I need oversize pistons for my SG and have posted an add in parts wanted, I have been looking at a Wiseco big bore kit on Ebay but they are now out of stock. Bit of a long shot but I know std FJ 1100 pistons are 74mm which just happen to be the same size as the Wiseco kit pistons but I need to know the pin dia. and the pin to top of piston height of the FJ items. May also need to cut valve relief's as the FJ is 4 valve........ any thoughts ?

I keep seeing
Big bore kits for the XS on E-bay.
Haven't really paid any attention to them beyond the mere curiosity of seeing them and wondering if I can have the piston skirts Teflon coated and the piston domes sprayed with ceramic to pump heat out the exhausts instead of bleeding into the engine for performance and cooling.79 SF & 80 LG MNS

All of my bikes are projects, maybe one day I'll have them running.

I have the 1196 big bore kit mentioned XS650Man and have been driving with it for 2 years. The kit looked Identical to the original parts in the XS11. It is not a re-engineered high performance kit to increase compression ratios but I did get a slight bump in compression. You need to take the cylinders to a shop with precision equipment to bore the cylinders and need someone to make small cuts because when boring to this limit there is heat generated that will egg shape these cylinders if to big a cut is done. They will need to recut a bevel at the bottom as this bore removes it all. The guy who did mine had a high speed hone and made the final sizing with it. Use the same clearance spec in the manual for skirt and rings and all will be fine. Make it tighter and the expansion when hot may give you problems. I feel it was a good high quality cheap kit to renew my engine and get a little performance gain.
I suggest a different method for assembly because it will be tight putting pistons in the first time. If interested PM me and I'll send it.
Its your choice you can spend $700 or $200 and get about the same.To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

Those eBay big-bore kits are pretty much all that's out there now; Yamaha service replacement pistons have been discontinued for years so trying to assemble a full set may be all-but-impossible. You do see odd lots of these in various oversizes, but almost never a set of four the same size. Wiseco discontinued theirs too, so unless you can find somebody that still has one in stock, there's very little choice...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

XS Pistons
There are several piston manufactures that will build you a set of custom pistons.
All you have to do is send them a stock one so they can profile the dome or a head but the spare piston deal is easier. Both Ross and J&E are two companies that are out there that have good stuff and I believe J&E is associated with Wiseco and I might add that the latest Wiseco design was the ultimate deal because of the ring package and the way that the ring lands were designed.
I was under the impression that Wiseco still offered the 1179 kit but had discontinued the 1196 (74.5mm) kit but I could be wrong but no matter, Ross will make you a set for the same price that a set from Wiseco cost.
The design of the original stock pistons is light years behind what can be had today as far as piston material, rings and so forth goes and if you are going to go through all the time and effort to rebuild a classic bike like the XS why in the world would you want to use junk pistons.....beats me.
I sent my cylinder block to Advanced Sleeves in Ohio for special sleeves, boring and honing to match my pistons and you can find them on the internet.
This is not rocket science but good parts don't come cheap and God only knows what you will find on flea bay.

As I'm in NewZealand sending a sample piston half way round the world may be out of the question but the idea of getting some made has crossed my mind, there used to be a company here called Denco Engineering that made 500 cc single Speedway Bike motors, sort of like your Flat Track. I'm about to do some research to see if they're still around. The Wiseco 1179cc kit has popped up again on Ebay for $667.68 plus shipping to NZ ( ouch ! ) but at the moment that's my only option.

I've just put the 1179 Wiseco kit in my E. With the cost of the kit and honing done at a speed shop of the jugs to match, it cost me around $1000 canadian. Thats about $750 US. I did find that it was much easier to install the pistons in the jugs first then flip the motor over and install the crank and con rods after, but my motor was completely torn apart anyway. I haven't fired it up yet but but getting there.mack

If it were me I would call Wiseco and get the 1179 kit and be done with it.
The 1196 kit is no longer available except by special order which is more expensive. A lot of the stuff you find on e-bay is old stock as Wiseco updated the pistons for the XS around Y2K.I've bought a couple sets of Wiseco pistons for the XS over the years and the latest ones have different skirts, lands and ring design than the original ones had. Mention is also made that a lot of dealers still have the original design and probably don't know the difference themself which is why I would get them directly from Wiseco.....if you can. In a worst case scenario you can get Ross or J&E to build you a set, they ship all over the world.
Good luck.
