The headers on my bike are looking a bit tired, I was going to rub them down and paint them as it's only surface rust, but see a lot of bikes heat wrapped, never used this and wondering wether it's any good?

If you do not mind them getting wet, and possibly rusting the pipes, they will work. They DO keep the heat in, and that helps flow the exhaust. Some people like the looks as well, but that is taste, or lack there of, depending on point of view.
Me, I just used high temp paint, flat black, on the headers...Ray Matteis

Wrap
As mentioned, the wrap causes rust. And not just a little rust. Headers will deteriorate rapidly.
Paint is one option. Ceramic coat is a more expensive option, but makes a worry free, good looking exhaust. Will not discolor.1981 XS1100H Venturer
