    Per boats. 78E-79F were mechanical pre-load, 80G-81H were air.

      ... and don't directly interchange. The threads are the same, but the machining is different enough that the late air caps won't fit the early fork tubes and seal properly without modifying them. The early caps will fit the late tubes, but won't have as much thread engagement, and again won't seal right.

      Another one of those inexplicable changes that Yamaha made...

        I was

        afraid of that. Ok so anyone have a source for the E/F caps. I'd go on Ebay but I really don't trust it after my previous experience with the crank shells.

          It's tough to find nice ones. I've got a couple of spares but they're pretty beat up with rounded corners from using a wrong-sized socket on them. Maybe Andreas can come up with a decent pair, have you tried him?

              No. I believe the Special forks are longer than the standard forks. I mean tubes.

                I believe the diameter

                is 1mm smaller in the special as well.

                  Tool

                  Didn't I see a thread on making your own tool to freeze the internals on E forks so you can get the bolts out of the bottom for disassembly?

                    Actually, the diameter of both Standard and Special fork tubes is identical at 37mm ... but as Marty pointed out, the Special tubes are longer.

                        I can't remember exactly, but I believe the standard forks are made by KYB and the Specials were made by Showa, or the other way around. Either way, it's two different manufacturers.

                          It's exactly as you described ... Specials have Showa forks, Standards have KYB.
