I need replacement mufflers-any out there?

I cut mine very near the mufflers, added some 1 3/4 (I think, I did this 2 years ago) and welded the pipe to the header boxes, then clamped the Road King muffs to the pipes. I didn't need to change the jetting, or mess with a cross-over pipe. I think mine ran even better with the Road King muffs. I put new spark plugs at the same time, and side gapped them, so that may have made a difference. I have a 79 F.

There's a local bike shop close that supplies Harley stuff, but can get you metric stuff also. They have a variety of slip on mufflers, so is there a specific diameter I need to tell them my exhaust pipes are?
So as far as installing them do you get a sawzall out and make sure you leave enough of a stub on the 2-1 manifold to mount it and then clamp it? Afterward I'll have to re-jet the carbs right? How do you determine what adjusting you need to do?

I put Harley Road King muffs on my 79F. Easy, sound nice, look nice, work fine.

The stock exhaust on these bikes sound the best to me! Second-place would be Kerker. Third is the aftermarket Supertrapp Universal SC Elites mufflers.

It is about 2-3mm. I just never noticed it until I started it after getting it back from my friend who stored it over the winter, when smoke started rolling out the left exhaust which also indicated the presence of what I'm really hoping is a 'drain hole'.
A PO had drilled 4 holes about 3/8" into the ends around the exhaust-to make them louder. I bought some jack bolts to plug them and tacked them with a MIG to keep them from rattling loose. Some like the loud exhaust-I never was a big fan of it. I really did love the Cobra exhaust on my previous Magna V-4 however. Not obnoxiously loud, just a really nice growl.

That hole may be factory; Yamaha put a drain hole (for water) on each muffler right there. If it is rotten there, you'll probably have to do some fabricating to repair that area before you can adapt other mufflers.

... And those drain holes are tiny ... between 2-3 mm in diameter.

I'm pretty sure it's the stock exhaust. Looking at it this afternoon I noticed the inside pipes have clamps connecting to the 'adapter' or 2 into 1 piece while the outside pipes are welded. I'm not sure how thin the metal is getting but the hole is right on the bottom of the very front of the muffler. I might be able to MIG a patch on.
I'm sure I can find some Dyna OEM's and with a little figuring get something to work out. I'll try getting some pics up. Thanks!

Hi JRM,,,you have a couple of options, patch the one you have or get a pair of Harley Mufflers. I have used them and they are fairly easy to put on these xs1100 bikes,,,,do a search for harley mufflers. The easiest are the dyna oem mufflers. They sound great, usually around 20-40 bucks a pair, ebay or craigslist. Usually the HD guys take them off new and put on aftermarket loud ones and sell the oem's. Unless your bike is pristine, and you want every piece stock,,,,check out the HD mufflers. I lost a slight amount of torque off the bottom, but after take off its not noticible and the sound is a nice growl, but subdued. Do not get the ones with crossover connections as it doesnt fit, the dyna models fit nicely, about 30 minutes to mount and ride. Also, the harley air shocks are 500 percent better than our old stock shocks and cheap also.....keep us informed,,,,Mike in Sun Diego

Exhaust systems are a problem on these bikes.... There's only one or two aftermarket ones available anymore (both are big $$$), so some ingenuity is needed if you can't find a good used system. Now, you don't say what you have on your bike; OEM or aftermarket. OEM systems didn't have removable mufflers (except for the XJ), so if yours are removable, you've got an aftermarket system. A few pics would be helpful, depending on what you have there's different options.

When I bought my '79 Special, I noticed patches on both mufflers. I've been fine for the last 2 years but now I have a new hole on the bottom left side. They're pretty thin and looking like crap so I figured it's time for new/used mufflers. I've looked around various sites but I'm not totally sure the bracket will be in the correct place for the slip on universal types. Any recommendations? Or, if you have some decent used mufflers I'll buy them.
(Also, I'd like to get my valves shimmed. If anyone around KC has some time on a weekend to spare, I'd very much appreciate some guidance while I'm doing this because I'm paranoid about messing with something so critical. I'll buy the beer, or whatever you like for helping. (Prostitutes and crack not included.)
