  • Looking to borrow a carb sync tool - MN

Looking for someone in my area with first hand experience that would be willing to assist me with syncing my carbs. I've been looking to buy a gauge but I just cannot swing it right now. Also to be honest I'm quite hessitant to dig in to it myself. In the past I've had issues with some very iffy cb's. I'm willing to travel to almost anywhere to meet up.

Bike currently runs but she likes to fire out the wrong way quite a lot.

    Thanks in advance

    close

I've made carb sticks, I have 3 that I've made in different sensitivities and a set of gauges. I just wonder if your problem goes deeper ? Have you bench synced them ?
I'd be willing to help, I'm 350 mi. from you.

      no...

I have not taken the cabs off. I'm sure they need to be cleaned and bench synced That I have not done simply due to fear knocking it so far out of wack it no longer runs well enough to ride.

That being said I know what my weekend is going to entail.

Thank you for asking the obvious.

Here's hoping I don't muck it up in the process.

      Cheers!

So what are your plans at this point ?
Having correct fitting screw driver will really take the tension out of your life, nothing worse than multiple trips to the Ace across town to get drills and easy outs. Then striping the heads off the pilot jets only to order the fake Mikunis and reordering the real deal. I make my own flat blade screw drivers and buy the right fitting phillips for each set of screws.
I and the Guys here be glad to help, just ask !

Well, sometimes well-fitting screwdrivers are irrelevant with those soft JIS screws on the bar holdong the rack together, and on the tops and bottoms of the carb bank. Have a dremel and an impact screwdriver on the ready just in-case.

            Plans?

The plans at this point are changing... Original plan was to stop the poping/overfire/backfire....

I started with fixing my pipes/muffler holes. There were a lot of them underneath the soup can holding the header to the muffler.... Welded new joints. Not pretty but no more holes. New exhaust gaskets. Exhaust should be solid now.

            Still popping but less.

Now I'm turning to the carbs. I do not know when the last time they have been off the bike for cleaning. I've had the bike for about 5 years now and I don't know the last time the previous owner had the carbs off. He owned it since 83.

Ideally I could take off the bank and clean them without dissasembling the whole thing? Take the caps and bowls off and a basic cleaning...?
Can I soak the whole bank in a solution withour causing damage to anything?

I'm afraid to start taking everything apart without having new on hand or even the ability to obtain new in a timely fashion. $ is the factor. And I only have one bike and I like to ride, and it currently rides....

(I have some electra glide slip ons welded on, so maybe that is going to require re jetting? I believe there were some holes punched in the baffles)

            Cheers!

The only carb dunk that will not hurt the rubber/nitrile in the carbs is the Yamaha cleaner, $$$$$, I've not tried the new formula.
I will try to get you through this with no cost, as long as you don't $ your time ?
This is my thought, MHO, before you pull the carbs drain the bowls into a clean shallow cut container that just fits under the drains, sour cream, butter, marg.. One carb at a time so as not to overfill the cup, let it sit a number of hours so it settles. Find out if your fighting anything coming from the tank ? If you find anything like little rust bits or bubbles floating at the bottom of the fuel you have debris and water, flush the tank, install in line filters.
I'm testing multiple sets of carbs right now so I know what your going through.
Please anyone that wishes to help, PLEASE DO !
Yes I've made bits for my impact driver that fit mains and pilots. PB blaster on the stuck screws/jets left over night. If that does not help add some carb or brake cleaner and let sit again, still NOGO, more PB and heat, light tapping on the bit in the slot, use a light touch and multiple hits rather than sledge hammer.
If you do happen to mess up the phillip heads they can be re shaped with a punch and tapping the impact driver bit into the slot.

                Rust in tank=yes

There is some rust in the tank. First thing I did this year was fix the seal around the gas gauge relay. I lost almost all my gas over the winter due to it leaking. I pulled the tank and cleaned it out. It kinda sounded like there was a fist full of sand in there. I had some inline filters I meant to put on last year but I had a whole bin of parts stolen out of my garage (750fd, gas filters, pods, seat, headlight bucket, middle drive, and all kinds of random parts n stuff).

So yeah, I really should have put some on after I cleaned the tank. I'll start there.

                I really appriciate your helpm.

                Cheers!

                  Carb drain=0

So i went to drain the carbs and nothing came out. It has sat for about a week without running but I assumed there would still be something to drain out. So I'm guessing the drain holes are plugged. Going to need to drop the bowls Saturday morning and see how gunked up they are.

                  Cheers!

Did you turn the fuel on just to see if any would come out the drains ?

                      chocolate milk

Seems as though my carbs turn clean gas into chocolate milk..... I got the carbs to drain by sticking some wite in the drain holes. It was dark brown coming out 3 of them and 1 looked like black powder mixed in the gas. I know they need to be pulled and cleaned thorough. Before I do that I'm going to find some rebuild kits and possibly get some jets on hand.

inline filters in place so I know clean gas is going in. Until I get the kits I'm just going to keep draining them often to see how much will drain out over time. There is less and less particles in the gas each time I drain the bowls.

Sounds like something I've seen before ! When I saw this the first time I thought the carbs would be junk, I was wrong. All I did was pull the bowls, spray carb clean them and the pilot jets, drained the tank put fresh gas and started up. I did not let that sludge get hard cleaned it as soon as I found it and there was still good looking fuel in the tank, GO FIGURE.
I just tried de-rusting a tank with rust remover found in the laundry isle at WM. Cleaned the rust out with just one bottle, $5, bad thing is the flash rust after rinsing the tank with water was severe, followed Marty's lead and bought a bottle of evapor rust, have not tried yet.
Even a little tiny spec of debris in your float bowls will get you a bad hour-days-weeks or discourage you and we don't want to get there. I'm the most patient, I will clean and flush over and over until I get it or it kills me, I'm still alive !
By the way the filters can only help so much, water and small debris will get through them.

                            Flow issues

Have had flow issues at HWY speed since installing the fuel filters. Had to remove them in the parking lot at work one day to make it home.

Draining the carbs and shooting carb cleaner in the drain holes has cleaned a log of gunk out. They are draining pretty clean now.

                            Still popping a lot.

Going to check timing and cam tension this weekend. Beyond that I need to check my valve shims I think.

Wish I had two bikes, one to ride and one to work on.

                            Cheers!

I think your getting ahead of the business at hand, that fuel system needs attention, tank, lines, filters and carbs. Without clean fuel getting to the carbs/engine I'm surprised it's running well enough to get you to work and back,,,,, really.
