  • start-up procedure

My bike is starting a bit more difficult than I think it should. I'm starting on full choke and then having to hold about 1/8-1/4 throttle open for about 1 minute to keep running. Then I go to half choke and hold throttle for another minute or 2. Finally, I can release throttle, and if idles ok at half choke, I ease the choke off.

    Sound right??? - adjusments required???

you should pull the choke all the way out
    no throttle
    hit the start button
it should fire up and settle into a high idle
    after 1 minute maybe 2
push the choke in half way
    the idle should drop some
    maybe tease the throttle some
    to keep it running
    they are cold blooded
i actually ride away with the choke half way
then push it in a half mile down the road

Like willy said, I don't use any throttle to get it started when cold. If I do, it makes it a bit harder to start. But once warm, That's a whole different story... No choke, and plenty of throttle. Instant start. And what a start! I have scared a lot of people walking by using this method.

Tom, I'd check the synch first, then the state of tune of the pilot circuit.

My xj starts without choke above 70 degrees, and idles right off. below 70 full choke for half min, then turn off choke and away i go.

          synch

I never did a proper carb sych, just the bench synch... On my to do list... It does start right up when choked (cold) without throttle, but then runs for just a few seconds and quits unless I add about 1/4 throttle and hold it.

When warm it starts no throttle, no choke, no problem.

Also when it's warm and I'm riding and blip the throttle, it 'bogs' for a very minute moment and then proceeds to tear my arms out of the sockets. Once in 2nd gear and roll on the throttle it just pulls and pulls. Could that momentary 'bogging' have anything to do with the start-up issues when cold?
