Accel Coils

I bought a set of Accel 140403K (3.0 olm) a few years ago and want to put them in the E that I'm doing right now. I haven't figured out how to fit them yet, but I'm working on that. The leads for the plugs come out the bottom and they are a nipple style, so I'm not sure if they will fit with the plug wires that came with them. My question concerns these wires. They are 8.8 silicone plus, grafite, RFI suppression. Pretty heavy guage, but I know that there was a discussion some time back on plug wires but I can find it. Are these any good or should I change them for a solid copper wind style, and can you get a 90 degree fitting for these nipples?

Yes, you can get 90 degree boots; NAPA here, Canadian Tire up there in TGWNorf? When you're happy with them, rig a set of plastic ties around the coils and the boots so the boots won't come off. Or not, it's up to you.

Just make sure you check the stupid wires every year or two because they get baked and sort of quit working after a while.

Hey Mack,

Do you want to have to go back in there under the tank in 5+ years and replace the wires as the graphite breaks down, or do you only want to go there when/if the coils ever die, yet the solid core copper wires will still be working just fine!? Unless you're running a radio on it while you're riding, you don't really need the RFI suppression. If you want you can use resistor plugs, but you don't have to with them either. You'll really like the stronger spark when you get it done, makes starting so much easier/quicker.

Wires

Ya, I really didn't like them from the beginning. They have a long (3 inches) hard plastic boot that would point straight down. I just don't think that there is enough room in there for that to work well. I'm going to figure out the mounting thing tommorrow. I'll make up a couple jigs with the right bends and twists then fabricate something permanent and mass produce it for all three bikes. If these 3olm coils work as well as everyone says, I'll upgrade the SF and LH as well.

Not a good day

So I was playing with trying to mount these coils and the phone rang. So I put the coil on the bench and went to the phone. When I turned around the coil was rolling over and fell on the floor. It broke of one of the secondary terminals. So , long story short, no accel coils for this bike!
Then I walk out and look at the pool. It would appear that I have a large sink hole starting under it. Big dip in the middle about twice as deep as it should be. I'll have to spend some time cutting out the liner to see where all the ground went.
Maybe I'll just set on the couch and watch the "masters", until this run of bad luck is over!

Hey Mack,

Did the coil tower and electrical inner part actually break off and sever the wire, or was it just the ceramic crown around the tower, but the metal inner portion is intact?? IF just the latter, I would think some J-B Weld would provide the proper fix. IF the plug wire socket broke from the secondary winding...that could be a little more problematic, but I would still think it worth the effort to attempt a repair anyways. IF you don't want to, and would be tossing them away, then send them to me!

I find the green 3ohm Dyna coils to be excellent. I've fitted them two XS11's, a GL1000 and my XJR.

I did a little tutorial here on how to fit the green Dynas on an XS11. It's easy to do and they fit nicely on the standard coil mounts.

If you have a ballast resistor, it needs to be bypassed by joining the feed wires together
