The guides in these engines almost NEVER go out! If you can find a NOS guide, that would be best. If not, I'll look and see what I have for heads, and IF I have a newer one, we can talk about how to get you something offline. I did send Brian a box of parts for the bike a few years ago. He found a bunch of stuff he needed in the US, had it shipped to me, and I re-boxed and shipped it all down to him, along with a few parts I had that he needed.
We all try and help around here, so just let us know.

I've got a few spare used valve springs, spring seats, buckets, guides, retainer clips, caps, you get the idea. The head got sanded to death on the freeway at 80 MPH (130 KPH) but most of the parts are still good and really low mileage.

Argh! Drat! I just noticed that I forgot to invert the colors (grays) before I uploaded the images! Like an infra-red picture, inverting and then embossing it gives a better image. Sorry about that!

            Here you go!

The thing that looks like a large bump on the oil seal is just glare from the light.

Hi Mark. Hopefully you're not referring to me with the 'cowboy' comment.

              That looks nasty.
I never had the top off that engine, and i dont recall changing shims at any point, but i doubt shims would cause that anyway. Shims dont really wear, and stay roughly the same thickness throughout the life of the engine, so if it was shim related it would've shown up long before you bought it. The wear in the valve system comes from the valve stretching over time, and closing the gap, and/or cam lobes wearing.
I think Scotts theory is the more plausible one, and given that we both have reservations about the guy from Birdlings Flat, its not too long a bow to draw.

It wasnt using oil when i sold it, but i will say that the last rally i took it too, (Vincent County) i had a comment from a following rider that it smelt rich. I never seen any black smoke, and fuel consumption was normal. but i did have trouble with No 2 carb some weeks prior, and had replaced a slide and diaphram from a spare carb. Its entirely possible that the guide was worn/damaged at that point, but im pretty sure i would have noticed it.

Have a squiz round Tradme, if you havent already. There was a guy from Auckland, that the older members of the group may remember as PGGG, that had some parts listed. He was largely a dreamer and wanted far too much for them, but he had a heap of bit.
The other option is the DiverRay method, for which i will always be greatfull. J

Sorry, but i cant shed anymore light on it at the moment.

Now. About that 'Ratty' 4 into 1. You know i built that, dont you. I think i should be hurt.

Hi Brian, no I was referring to the guy I bought it off at Birdlings Flat, he mentioned something about racing his mate to Akaroa at night with no lights ! No I didnt know you made the 4 - 1, it was touching the bottom of the motor so I cut it apart to give it some clearance and it was quite restricted in one of the pipes, I had a pair of matching mufflers and I liked the look and sound of a twin setup so used your header pipes and fabricated the rest, no offence Brian. So what was the trouble you had with the #2 carb ? Seems like #2 is jinxed on the old girl.

It had a hole in the diaphragm. Perished on the outer edge. Could've fixed it but I had a couple of spares from my old XS750 so made most sense to swap it out. I did a quick manual balance of the slides afterwards, but not a vacuum balance. Performance was vastly improved after that so i didnt bother.

That restricted exhaust tube was the result of 'bellying' it out crossing a rally paddock one day. Should've fixed it, but i came off it coming home from that rally and broke my leg, so it wasnt exactly a priority if you know what i mean, and that was the reason I got the parts in from the US.

There was a couple of homemade stainless mufflers, made by the PO before me, in the box of bits that i sent to Birdlings Flat. Did you use those? or did you have some others.

                  God I miss that bike.

No Brian there were no S/S mufflers in the box. Did I tell you I adapted the 750 final drive that was in the box ? Made a big difference.
When I get the motor sorted I will balance the carbs just to be on the safe side.
