  • Yamalube carb dip?

Can anyone tell me for certain if the Yamalube carburetor cleaner dip is safe to dunk the carbs from a MNS. I have only tried it on non painted/coated carbs so far. I sure would hate to take the finish off these Midnight special carb's by doing a prolonged dip.

I use an ultrasonic cleaner for the carbs. No problems with anything other than the dirt! My MNS carbs will need new paint when I go through them, though. Bike sat for 20 years, and the covers have been painted black like the carbs.

Are you talking a bout the Yamaha carb cleaner you mix with water? If so that stuff works good for cleaning the dirt and varnish but won't hurt the rubber or paint.

        I've used it.

Have not used it on midnight carbs but I mix it with non E fuel with good results on aluminum carbs. Been thinking of trying other carb cleaners mixed with the good fuel ?

Uncle Done hasn't picked up a bottle of Yamalube carb dip in some time. The old formula was supposed to be mixed with gasoline. Today, it's water. He just hasn't caught up yet.

I have 2 bottles of the old stuff on hand. I remember now that someone told me they changed the formula. The old can be mixed with water for boiling or with fuel for soaking. Never cared for the idea of putting water in my carbs. Don't boil fuel !

I had one black carb that was odd man out. I do not know if it was a midnight special carb or just one that was painted black yet. I will have to see if I can find any numbers on it. I soaked it over a 24 hour period.
All of the black that is on the upper bell where the diaphragms go is blistered up in a huge way. The rest which is on the middle part of the body seems ok.
This is the three parts water to 1 part Yamaha carb dip stuff. Makes me a bit leary of soaking a full set. The guy I am doing these carb's for is the mechanic that put my 79SF together on pre-delivery, and he is still a mechanic on bikes although they are Hardly's.
Is there a different type of coating on the MNS carb's or is it just typical paint? I really do not want to screw this particular re-build up.

I have an XS650 Heritage Special that I bought new. The black on those carbs is long gone. My best guess is don't soak them if you don't want to repaint them.

Or if you never want them to work right.

Fix them so it'll run right and repaint as necessary if you feel the need.

                        Carb cleaners

I was going to do a thread on this, in the summer but I'll just say a bit here. I have an utrasonic cleaner (branson 8510) and have used everything from pinsol, simple green and evenflo carb cleaner straight. The best thing i've found is a product called crystal that hospitals use for autoclave machines. It's aluminum friendly and will remove all the dirt and crap off the carbs and lossen up everything so they can be completely disassembled down to the bare bodies. If yours can be stripped without step one, then just go to the next step.
Then I have a big chili pot on a camp stove outside with boiling water. I place the bare bodies in and I boil them for about 10 minutes, then take them out and blow air through the passages. They dry completely almost instantly and I'll repeat as required until all the passages blow clear. Let them cool then you can put them back together.
All the small pieces go through the crystal in the u/c and come out looking like new.
If your mns carbs haven't been rattle canned black, the boiling won't hurt them at all.

It's all good. As for Ray, the first couple passes in boiling water do leave a froth that looks a lot like beer! Change water as required until smell and froth don't look like budweiser and smell like varnish! This method is as good as any and is far cheaper on the pocket book and easier on the nose!
