  • I want to cry...

Yesterday my friend who kept my bike in his garage over the winter dropped it off yesterday. I get home from work and there it is-with a flat front tire and hardly any gas. I noticed 4 teens malingering by the apartment complex garage-it's in a corner and I guess all the kids go there to smoke dope. No biggie. I go to my apartment and change thinking I'll clean it up and maybe get that tire fixed.
10 minutes later after changing I head out and immediately notice my bike knocked over on it's right side. I was able to get it back up but by turn signals are bent, scuffed and the lenses are cracked along with my $200 windshield. I've had it over 2 years without ever tipping it and this happens within 15 minutes. It was on it's side stand-and I wish my friend had put it on it's center stand but I can't be mad at him.
My wife said she heard a group of kids/teens laughing and running away by the window right as I was entering the apartment so I can only assume the asswipes I saw earlier knocked it over...I'm beyond pissed and really wish I could crack some skulls with a baseball bat right now.

    Oh man... that sucks.

The turn signals shouldn't be too difficult to take care of... In fact, I might have a couple with decent lenses.

Thanks for the offers to help guys. I really appreciate it and wish I could help repay somehow. I'm a little pissed at my 'friend' who kept my bike in his garage over the winter because it was filthy, and when I tried starting it the low fuel light came on and I couldn't get the engine to catch. I'm thinking no way there's no gas but sure enough when I shone my flashlight inside the tank there's not even residue of gas left. It was completely dry so he must have drained it.
With the new battery and new gas she caught right off but I noticed the left exhaust smoking really bad-and a new pinhole rusted through the bottom of the muffler. After running a few miles it seems to have stopped but I now a carb cleaning is in order.
Yes, I'm definitely interested in those turn signal assemblies so let me know what you want for them. Since I'm already here, has anyone found spark plug wires that can be ordered online for my Special? Mine are getting really crappy-to the point that morning dew is shorting them.
            Thanks a bunch!

That really sucks. I heard there is one of those stupid teen challenges out there like the "eat a spoon of cinnamon" or the "randomly punch a stranger" things and it's "knock over a motorcycle" challenge. All I know is that if that happens to my bike I''m going to try my hand at the new "knock over a teenager" challenge I just invented... in a totally fun way of course.

I want to cry...twice or thrice

Well what can I say? I take off work early to get the bike inspected and the mechanic just happened to have left early because of sickness so now it's after 5pm and no one else around here does inspections...
I'm not sure what my friend did to my bike while he kept it in his garage but it seems like the front tire bounces-yes bounces slightly going down the road. While trying to get to the inspection place I coasted downhill and kicked it in neutral-and much to my dismay the drive line seems very noisy. I'm wondering if I have a u-joint getting loose. I'm not sure if he hot-rodded on it or what happened but it seems like theres a lot of little things going on with it.
It's one thing to get f'd by a random stranger but quite another to have it done by someone you thought you could trust...rant concluded.

Drive line noise, remove rear drive and apply moly grease to splines on drive shaft. Also check/change oil level in final drive and middle drive (soon!) if someone pulled a "wrong" plug, the middle drive may have been emptied!
Front tire can be out of balance or out of round. Both are easy to check. Put bike on center stand, put a jack under front cross bar on frame, and raise the front tire off the ground. You can now spin it, and use a pencil to check the edge of the rim, and then the tire. You can look at the marks to see how far "off" the tire is.

Ray, I checked middle and final drive cases before I did any riding Saturday. Both were good. I've always made sure the splines had plenty of grease also. I know the drive is supposed to make some noise, but it just seemed louder than normal as soon as I let out the clutch coasting downhill in neutral...maybe I'm being paranoid after having not ridden it since last fall, I don't know. Does the shaft have a spider gear?
Cam chain is making some noise also. I put in an auto tensioner from a Raptor last year. Probably time to check it. Thanks for the tips!

I need to buy a house so I can have a garage to take my time getting things straightened out...parking lot repairs are getting old.

These bikes ARE noisy! IF you have a fairing, the engine is REALLY noisy! It's just the nature of the 35 year old beast. IF the U-joint is bad, you can get a replacement for it. I have a box here with the part number if you need it. It fit an old Toyota or Datsun, don't remember at the moment.

                        Hey JRM,

If it sat with the flat tire for some time, then you probably have a flat spot in the tire from the beads/plys being bent under the bikes weight. Hopefully it didn't cause the bead to slip some as well, and so as stated, after reinflating, prop up the front end so you can perform a runout/spin test of the wheel/tire and check to make sure you can see the tire bead indicator strip all the way around the tire....see the tech tips for chaning a front tire for photo examples.

Now...the lack of gas could be your friend taking it out for a joy ride, but could also be leaky carbs/petcocks? Smoky exhaust could be fuel in the oil? You said you checked the middle/final drives, did you recheck the engine oil levels, or change the oil after it's winter nap?

I know it's time to change the engine oil. Probably ought to do the middle and final drives as well. Might as well pull the final drive out and check the shaft. It's becoming a pain to keep maintenance up on it as well as my other two cars. Selling it is starting to creep up in the back of my mind. After working a 9 hour day outside doing maintenance at an asphalt plant, I'm pretty well spent after fighting traffic getting home and the last thing I want to do is turn wrenches on yet another machine...(tonight's been a bad night...brake caliper locked on car going home. Just replaced them 2 weeks ago after having the same one lock up on the old set.)
I'm pretty sure the front tire went flat over the winter and stayed that way...I think my friend got tired of after he claimed he lost two tanks of gas that drained out of my bike. I told him it had two petcocks and he must have forgot. It being a fairly cheap Shinko tire it probably did slip...tack on another item to the 'to do' list...bummer.
