  • Molly or hypoid

When reinstalling the middle drive unit, do you use molly or hypoid to lube the middle driven gear socket (female)and the middle drive unit drive spline (male)connection?

I'm pretty sure the manual calls for not just a moly lube, but a high concentration moly lube. The stuff almost feels like a warm wax it is so fully of moly. But double check the manual. It will spell it out.

The manual is 30 years old. I have the 850FD mod and it's been working flawlessly with the spacer mod with just plain old wheel bearing grease for 50 - 60K miles. That coupling doesn't slide anyway.

That spline shaft should be getting lubed from the gear oil in the unit itself.

          Lube

The FSM and the Haynes don't mention anything about lubing this connection but it stands to reason that something should be used. If you look at the lube chamber, I don't think the hypoid would get up that high to hit this joint unless there is a lot of splash going on. I just don't see that happening with two 45 degree pinion gears. They mesh so tight that it would be more like a slow blender in a cake mix. Thats why I asked. Your right though in that the shaft and socket have no movement other than rotation. I'm going to lean toward the molly.

Either one will work. I used Mobil 1 Wheel bearing grease on mine, and it's still good 60K later. The REAR DRIVE NEEDS MOLLY! It has a LOT of pressure, and rides in and out as the back wheel goes up and down.

That's the one I was thinking of! Sorry!
