  • Strange Stall?

    Hi everyone,
Second day in a row the bike has done this. Rides perfect to work not a miss tick or anything. Sets all day in the Florida Sunshine 80s today. I jump on at 330 fires right up go 2-3 minutes and stalls like out of gas, Yesterday after 30 or more seconds trying to start it (puts puts puts) I put it on first choke and it started ran fine, took the chock off and put 25 miles on it ran perfect. Today Perfect in morning, same thing after work, got it to start by switching to reserve on my pets. Mile or so down the road turned them back and still ran fine.

Did I get some crap gas?

    any ideas

I kind of thought something like a hot vapor lock but today I put my key in and opened my tank for a second before I started it

        Hey Jeff,

You're leaving out important details....we can't remember everyones bike or their condition....so things like if you still have the OCTY vacuum control valve on it, or are you running it just straight from petcocks to carbs?

IF you do have the Octy, it's diaphragm may be sticking a bit, or the vac. hose to it may be cracked/leaking?? Sitting in hot sun....fuel evaporates from the bowls. THEN if you don't PRIME the carbs first, AND if the octy isn't flowing properly, you may be running low on fuel because the bowls can't get refilled like they need to be.

IF you don't have the Octy, then again, fuel evaporating while sitting. The special petcocks are just gravity feed/flow....and just turning them to ON would be the same as PRIME without the Octy. But if the bowls aren't filling after sitting....then it could be too long/low of a loop of fuel line from the petcocks to the carbs....or crud in the carb inlet T's, or the bowl float valve screen? As mentioned earlier, a clogged gas cap vent can prevent the fuel flow...but you stated you have been able to drive 20-30 miles without a problem.

I have a 1980 Special 1100 I do not think I have the Octy just gravity. Yesterday I filled it up on the way to work, turned the petcocks sideways to prime then back 15 minutes before I left work no problems nice 30 mile ride last night. Great on the way to work, then same old thing on the way home sputter sputter, turned the Petcock to reserve and fired right up and drove away. Turned them back on the reg and no problem the rest of the way home.

OK, this tells me you DO have the octy! When you use prime, it uses the front nipples on the petcock. Reserve, On use the rear nipple. I would look into a rebuild kit for the octy, as once done, they ARE pretty reliable. That should fix your problems. You can get rid of the octy and do the as some of the members here. Block off the front nipple on the petcock, and run fuel line from the rear to a pair of carbs.

Sounds to me like you'll need to do a thorough inspection of the fuel system including the inside of the tank.

If you haven't done this yet, there may be 35 years of crud in them parts.

Either that or your Eleven is allergic to your workplace, might be time for a career change.

At this time of year I wish I did too

Here's a diagrahm of your fuel system, maybe you can track down any discrepencies:

The only change to the diagram is that the PRIME SIDE has gas running out of the nipple ONLY ON PRIME. The ON and RESERVE gas runs out of the HOSE from the Octy.
Do check the octy, pull the one large phillips screw, take it off the carbs, and look for a very small hole on one side of it. it is the bleed hole for the vacuum. if it's plugged, or the vacuum hose from #2 manifold to the octy is split, it will not work correctly.
And yeah, it's a LONG drive from here to FL......

Isn't that what the diagram shows or am I misunderstanding you.

And I agree with You and TC, that the problem may be found in a faulty octy valve or the manifold vac line.

That's what I get for trying to help from work. Trouble shooting electronics, then going to mechanical on a computer and NOT READING every work.

                          Better

I got some sea foam and put 3/4 cup in a full tank. Got to thinking about it and I am going to do a tear down to install newer intake boots, I plan on just installing new lines, cleaning everything out.

I have 40 miles on the gas sea foam mix and it ran fine. It even left work ok also.

I just had carpel tunnel surgery and the bike set from daily driving to 16 days of not even starting I don't think. The problem started right after that.
