    Brake Pads

    Hey guys, my front calipers have been hangin up for a little while now, so I'm ordering hoses, rebuilt kits, and fresh pads.

    I got the stainless lines coming from technafit and found the caliper rebuild kits on mikesxs but was curious about the pads

    Was looking at these pads but it lists them just as "right" or "right front" for the XS1100 in the description.. Do I need 2 sets of these and they will work in both front calipers? Or am I missing something.

    I was also curious what you guys are running for pads and if any have better performance than the ones from mikes.

        Hey Hak,

        The reason why you only found 1 set is because the 400 only has 1 front caliper. SO...to get the LEFT side pair of pads, you need this one:

        However, the description they(MIKES) provides is a little different...calling the LEFT ONE standard "sintered" pads. ??

        Sintered is usually where the pad material is embedded with metal particles to help them last longer as well as to be more effective at the higher temps incurred with heavy braking action.

        Just checked, www.partsnmore.com don't have them.

        Dennis Kirk has both Kevlar as well as Semi-Sintered.

        Lots of folks have found them on eBay as well. The thing you need to understand about Specials pads is that they are slanted from bottom to top, and the slants are opposite for each side, L and R and so that's why you have to get separate sets for each side.

        The pads for Standards are FLAT, a different shape, and so you have to be sure when you're searching for them that you are searching for the Specials, the 79SF, 80SG, 81SH...but not the 81LH/Midnight Special.

        Now, as to the sticking pads/calipers...you will also want to check out and clean the master cylinder as well....especially the SPOOGE HOLE....see the tech tips for info/photos about it...it's the return flow hole to allow the pressure/fluid to return to the MC, but if clogged will cause the calipers to NOT release...drag and such.

        Fully sintered pads are more for racing applications, and don't work as well until they get warmed up a lot more than OEM pads.

          I'm using SBS ceramic pads. They're very effective, easy on the rotors, and quiet. Sintered pads will be harder on rotors, less effective until hot, and may make noise.

            Man you guys really are the best. Thanks for the info about the pads, I somehow missed the listing for the left pads? Haha. Got some shopping to do tonight then.

            I already replaced the master cylinder hoping that would solve the problem. So that's why I'm getting everything else now, I don't want to mess around with it again lol

            Thanks Ian! It's actually gold vinyl striping, it matches across the top of the tank as well.

              I use EBC organic pads on the XJ and on the Concourse. XJ pads are FA70 (front) and FA41 (rear).

              Here is an excerpt from the EBC catalog for other XS11 front and read pads:

              Use these numbers to order from any dealer that handles EBC parts. At the moment you cannot order directly from EBC, at least here in the US.

                Nice! Thanks guys! I like EBC products and found the pads on sale on Amazon from EBC direct with prime shipping! Hopefully have them by the weekend!

                I can't say it enough this is the most helpful forum I've ever been a part of. You guys are great.

                  Hey again,

                  One more thing....if your brakes seem to pulse or such, inspect the 1 long mounting bolt for the caliper when you take it off. IF it's slightly bent, it can cause pulsing and such....just replace it to allow the swivel action of the calipers to work properly.
