  • Cam lobe delamination

I checked my valve clearances tonight and I found that my #2 intake lobe looks to be delaminated.

Check this picture out and tell me if this will be a problem?

Pull it and measure it. There is a spec in the service manual. Picture is unclear. Not looking too good.

Yep, that's a problem..... you need another cam.

Yamaha doesn't say what the cams are made of; most are cast-iron then 'flame hardened' to a certain depth to resist wear. These may be plated with something compatible with the shim metal. In any case, if this surface is coming off, replace the cam. I'd throw away the shim too...

I agree with Steve, no good, not to mention those little pieces went somewhere..
Could have been because the bike sat for a long time..used to see it alot on cars that were only used in the summer.......

          Cam

It will only get worse. Time for a replacement. May want to use assembly lube when putting back together. Check lobes and shims on other cam, chain, adjuster, etc. May want to consider a different brand of oil.

When checking lobes on cam, use a micrometer or digital caliper. All lobes should be the same on each cam being measured.

I agree that the chrome is coming off and concerns me as far as metal bits floating around in the motor.....

I have 3 other motors to pull from. So do I pull other cam and it's 4 shims??? then tighten and measure and then remove again to get the shim size needed, or is there a way to measure outside and get an educated guess as to what shim that I will need before putting back together?

Way back when I did the first valve checking and shim replacement, I didn't realize that you can't rotate the crank without a shim in the bucket. This is the lobe that bumped the bucket back then. Back then I only used the shim tool. This time I am going to pull the cam and see all at one time.

                Oil filter should catch them.

No, use the shims that are in the bike. The cams should be very close, and the shims are for the valve lash. You will want to change the bucket and shim on the one valve, with one from the other head, though. DO NOT force the bucket into the head, if it will not go, try another bucket.

I pulled the extra cam tonight. I was already thinking about swapping any damaged buckets that I find on the intake side.

I Am a little nervous about getting it out of time. But I have read and reread the how to and maybe I can take apart and get it back together. Sure would hate to mess it up when it is running so good.

I know to torque all bolts, but do you put lock tight on the sprocket bolts? They don't have locking washers.

Use blue Locktite if any, it can't hurt. I never use any and haven't had one come loose yet. <knock>

I got the new cam in tonight and after 4~5 rotations I checked the clearances and as I figured, I will have to change out some shims! So Saturday I'll run over to Gainesville motor sports and see if I get lucky.

Yep, last time they were very helpful.
I might take my "run lean" motor and see what it has in it. Tonight I took all of the shims out of the motor that has a hole in the block and none of them are what I need.
